need help on file type association

I use vista. I also use media player classic.
But I find that windows media player keeps taking back file type association from media player classic.

I cannot find any file type association setting in windows media player.

Is there any way to stop this?

Try going to start -> all programs -> default programs

If that doesn't work try right clicking on the type of file you would like mpc to open and click open with -> choose default program.

One of the two should work for you hopefully

In Vista, can u access File Types like in XP? In XP u go to Control Panel/Folder Options/File Types. Go to the File type u wanna change, click Change. Select the program u want to open it (either from the list or hit Browse and find the .exe), and check the box 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' Click OK.

*Once I finally install Vista Business today, (after 2 years of putting it off) I can answer Vista topics better*

Hmm odd, I've gotten this to work in both Vista 32 and 64 using the methods above. I just realized that I omitted the right click part on the file and then select choose default program. You tried this though?

Actually vista doesn't have that feature. I can only try to open media file with MPC and check "Always use...".
But WMP keeps taking back association. And I can't find any setting in option of WMP.
Freaking WMP, I am trying to find what hidden program/service that causes this, so that I can disable it.

Vista has it, it's now just in a different place. Did you go to start -> all programs -> default programs? It should be located towards the top, above the folders. Once you are here you can go specifically into the file extension and select the default program. That or you can choose the program and set the type of files that are opened with this file.

I notice the WMP file type takeover because of WinPatrol's popup notice. After countless saying "no", I just let it go.
By my surprise, though WinPatrol shows avi assoicates with WMPLAYER.exe, MPC remains the one that opens avi files whenever I open one.

Thanks for all your helps 🙂
