Need help on camera case

I was originally looking at a lowepro slingshot 100, but then I got paranoid about pickpockets when I go to Ecuador. Backpacks are not usually good to have on. Is there anything that I can keep in front of me or any sort of theft proof camera pack? The only thing I have really seen so far is a camera strap from pacsafe. I would rather have a case though so I can hold my lenses and such. Any help?

We would need more info. How much gear are you planning to bring. What glass? What body? Accessories? There are only so many bags that you can keep in front of you that offers ample room. My personal choice would be a think tank photo speed demon which is a hip/belt pack that is worn like a fanny pack. Its big enough to hold a pro body and extra glass. I am not familiar with cases but another good option would be carrying an inconspicuous bag such as a Domke that just looks like a rugged shoulder bag.

I can personally attest to this bag - the LowePro "OffRoad."

It has a hefty waist belt and also a shoulder belt. This lets you position it in front which mitigates pick pockets. I have use it in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Europe. Pick pocketing is an art form in Rome! 🙂

I just got a Pentax K100D with 18-55mm lens and an extra 50-200mm lens. That bag looks nice, but for $100 is a little out of my price range.

I like the Slingshot100....its not pick proof, but I have walked with it in the front for awhile and it works decently. Its meant to be carried in both positions as well.

I went to Rome last year and India before that and you just have to be aware. In my experience people are not going to try to keep pace with you while walking; its only crowded areas where you have to be careful (on buses, etc). If you are really paranoid you can look at something like PacSafe. Its not cheap but it has metal wires running through it, making it slashproof and very tough to get inside.

I really like the slingshots i have the 300 because I need more room but I think its the best compromise between a pack front/back pack. Oh another good option would be to find any pickproof bag that you might have (It could be an old school bag) and buy the domke inserts. This would prob give you more bag options.

Take a look at the Adorama Slinger bags. I have the large one, which really is too large to carry, but the smaller version might work for you. They are reasonably well constructed and are cheaper than Lowepro.

Theft proof? If you aren't hauling a lot of gear, there are plenty of options... The fav one I heard is a diaper bag.. 😉 Many are actually pretty well waterproofed internally for minor accidents.... And who wants to steal someone's diapers?

As for the normal bags, Lowepro has always treated me well. I have a small offtrail with the couple extra lens cases that go with it, and then the larger Off Road, which holds two lenses internally, plus my camera with a big lens... It also comes with a couple extra lens cases and a beefy shoulder strap to manage the higher wait that is can hold...
