Oops, my denominator is incorrect. I forgot you multiply those exponents, lol. My bad.

oh yeah, i never had a teacher who was anal about simplifying all the way down, so if you're wonder why mine looks a bit different, that's why.

The main idea here is to apply the product rule (or quotient rule) and the chain rule. Simplifying is not the point of this question. I think the teacher expects you to know Algebra I if you're in Calculus.

Here is anohter way...Look in quote mode to see it better

7x 7x * (x^3-1)^-4
------------ =
(x^3-1)^4

Then you use the product and chain rules..

[7x * -4(x^3-1)^-5 * 3x^2] + [(x^3-1)^-4 * 7]

then just simplify

Essentially what they did was common factor. I'm putting up a pic now.

Edit:
Hope this helps

Ahh, you did it differently in the beginning.

This makes your brain hurt?

Edit: I just checked. Neither Maple nor Matlab simply it all the way for you. I also checked Mathematica... Guess what, you'd have to use your poor brain for this one. ;)

You know what, I forgot that there are functions to simplify, so this mental giant wouldn't have to strain his brain.
