Need help - New WinXP install is very slow

Just had to do a fresh install due to a new motherboard (Abit IT7-II Max2 ver 2.0 (845PE chipst)).

After I start the computer, it hangs for a while at the 'welcome' screen, then it intermittantly takes long pauses which seem to contain a lot of hard drive activity.

All of this same hardware (save the board & RAM) did NOT have this problem with my old TH7-II RAID board.

My mother's P3 450 with 128MB ram is more responsive than my P4 2.4 GHz with 256 MB ram

I installed the inf drivers, etc, etc. But this one has me beat.

Please, help. 🙁

Excessive HDD activity under specific circumstances can usually be helped by a good old defragment. Getting ahold of Norton Utilities or some other more advanced defrag utility is a good idea. More advanced programs will allow you to choose which files go at the beginning and end of the HDD. Always put your pagefile first.

This is a fresh install of winxp... there is no other software loaded, just device drivers and sp1.

It's acting like DMA is disabled and the HDD is running in PIO mode. Unfortunately, the HDDs are running off the HighPoint 374 controller (not as RAID arrays, as independent drives).

My Pentuim 1 laptop is more responsive 🙁

it does it everytime you reboot? because, the first time WinXP loads after an fresh install it does pause for a bit while it does it thing. It shouldn't do it everytime though. Check the event log, see if there are any errors being reported.

when i had trouble installing windows XP, i put fail safe defaults on in the bios. when windows had installed succesfully, i put optimized defaults back on 😀

Do you have jumpers installed on the WD hard drive? if so, totally remove them. This should set the drive as "single device" and solve the issue.

EDIT: I looked at the wrong post and thought that you had a WD hard drive.... If you do not, disregard the above... If you do, try it. 😉
