Just got the parts in from newegg and built the system, and it wont come up on screen...

the specs

intel p4 3ghz w/ HT
abit ic7-g
kingston hyperx 3500 512mb X 2 sticks
ati radeon 9700 pro AGP
case: antec sx835II 350w power supply

i hooked it all up, turned it on and nothing shows on screen, the fans spin, the lights come on, hd goes, but no display

i tried a known working monitor (used the system on a new mon. the first time)
also tried a known working ati radeon 7500 agp with no luck

also tried with just one stick of the ram, alternating between the two and nothing

any tips? advice? ANYTHING? what could possibly be bad, or hooked up improperly...

at what time do i need to contact newegg for an rma, and how would i know what part? most likely the mobo?

tia, if you need more info just ask or pm

Did you pull it all out and test it outside the case (just in case the mobo is shorting), without anything plugged in except the power switch, one stick of memory, processor, video card and powersupply. This will isolate to just a few things possibly wrong.

Shouldn't be a problem, I use my mobo box typically though so I don't scratch my table with the sharp solder points.

well i tried that, nothing ...

is it a faulty mobo?

wouldnt *something* come on screen if it was the ram?

if i had a darn pci vid card i would try that to see if its the agp port

any other ideas?

Well, if the RAM was bad enough it could be locking the bus I suppose. Try hooking up the pc speaker and take the ram out first and boot then the video card out and see if either gives diagnostic beeps. If it don't then you probably have either a bad mobo, chip or powersupply. Without having spares you won't be able to isolate further. (I know you can power on your supply by shorting the green wire to the black wires, but if a single rail is bad you won't know)

pull the battery for a few seconds then put it back in. That will reset the bios to defaults in case there is some problem with the bios.

removed the ram, started it up...

getting a long beep w/ small interval of silence...

beep lasts about 5-6 seconds with 3-4 seconds of silence, and just repeats
(this is w/o ram, is that normal w/o ram?)

upon removing the video card, i get no beeps, same as with it in, should it beep?

Well, it all depends on how long it has been since you got the stuff. Either way you will be able to get replacement as long as it was all retail stuff.

Well, I am not sure but it sounds like it might be bad memory or bad memory circuitry (controller or voltage regulator) on the motherboard. If it is locking the bus so bad that you don't get diagnostic beeps then either could be your culprit. (Probably not your processor though)

First of all. place mobo on static bag on table. Connect power supply. Place power supply. Plug in PC speaker if not one onboard. (for error beeps) remove and reseat processor. power on the board. should hear beeping. This is a good sign. Probably means that the motherboard is OK. place RAM power. Beeps should be differnet to idicate that video card is missing. This is also a good thing. Means that board has an even better chance of being OK. Place video card, hope for no beeps and video signal. If still nothing.... Pull CMOS battery. Power on system. Power Down System. Place CMOSBattery. Hope it works. If it still doesn't work Abit does offer technical support get on the telephone with them. If they say its bad... send it back

hi

1. try using only a single stick of ram, and/or better yet, your old ram if the mobo supports it.

2. check for any type of jumpers or dip switches and double check / cross reference with manual.

3. double check the additional 12v power connector. the square 4 pin one, not the main one. remeebr the p4 3gig + require 2 power connectors to the mobo. also check the CPU fan connection(s). on some boards the system wont come on without the CPU fan.

4. disconnect ALL drives, directly from their cables on the mobo.

5. disconnect ALL additional devices. that means take out any network cards, sound cards, etc.

6. remove, double check all pins on the CPU, reinstall CPU on the mobo.

7. restart computer with : 1 solid known to work stick of RAM, 1 known to work video card, mobo, CPU. no drives or anything else needed at this point.

that alone should boot you into the bios and the system shold hang when it gets to the drives. then start swapping the components for the new ones. 1st do the RAM. if the ram, if it works then do the vid card, if it doesnt work then you have found your problem. then swap the vid card. then add your main hard drive, then CD, then secondary drive if you have one.

i usually install the OS at this point, and add any additional peripherals such as sound, networking, etc. after the installation. it seems to work better and its easier to customize.

Wow. I got it working. I just cleaned off my CPU really well and made sure it was seated... works perfectly now.
