Need help new build has problem

Hooked up a gigabyte 7x board with a 1500 xp processor and went to turn it on for the first time and got a yellow led 2 on on the board turned on. Nothing showing to the monitor but no alarms, and everything but the front on/off and reset lights appears to be working. I did not use spacers for the screws as the case has risers built in. Any idea of the cause of this I am stumped on this end. Thanks for any help you can give.

I'm not sure of the MB LED indication, you could go to Giga-byte and check out the user manuals for the specific MB, or their technical support.

As far as troubleshooting, start with the basics.

Did any/all fans CPU/CASE fans startup when it was turned on?

Double check everything. Reset everything carefully. Check all jumper settings and switch/LED connections.

Pull everything except the bare minimum, which would be CPU/Memory/P/S video/kybd/mouse then try to turn on. It should at least post.

If still no go, try different stick of memory, and/or different memory slots.

If still no go, I would pull the MB out, place on a static bag or other non-conductive surface, and install the mimimum components and test on the bench. If you have different CPU/Memory/P/S, try replacing each in turn, starting with Memory, then CPU, then P/S.

If it works on the bench but not in the case, there is something touching the MB in the case that is causing a short. Try using pastic washers to isolate the MB from the case.

Thanks for responding to my plea. All fans are working. Going to try your suggestions and see what we can find. Now to find a computer shop here open on sunday to get spacers or one of the other two items if neccassary. My instinct is telling me bad CPU but my hopes are for needing spacers. Here goes nothin.

If you think it is a bad CPU, if you have a different CPU that will work in that MB, try running it first. If that CPU is a no go, then swap memory.

Or try that CPU in another PC if you can. I would try setting it up and running on the bench out of the case too.

I tend to be methodical in my troubleshooting. Starting with the simple things, like making sure everything is seated properly, then trying with bare minimum components, then I start swapping components, then I pull out and try to run on the bench (actually, on new builds, I get them running on the bench first and tested before putting everything in the case).

I have a GigaByte board - I also always have an LED on; not really sure what its there for - but I haven't had a problem with it so I just ignore it 🙂

From experience.. when I'm building an entirely new type of setup - I build it outside of the case on a cardboard box or small plastic crate so I can make sure it works before introducing the metal sides of a case. 😉

Good advice networkman and raysun2b, but even outside the unit it is not working. Think Im gonna try clearing cmoss before switching cpus. But it is definately the CPU. Instinct is usually right.

I got an XP1700 from Monarch computers. It is OEM for $117, but Monarch is an AMD affiliate and give full 3 yr warranty on all AMD CPU's. Shipping was a modest $12 for fedex saver. It was from the "good" batch of AGOGA stepping- known to have been for XP1900/2000. They must have had a shortage of XP1700's and used these higher rated chips for them.

I got the chip and heat sink at a local place today for 189.00 Seemed Kinda high, but I didnt want to mess around any more. And system is up,but have to format HD and all the rest of the lovely stuff. Will be running by tommorrow for sure with Seti in tow. Cant wait this has been a long weekend. I dont wanna do another build again for quite some time.
Thanks everyone.

i rebuilt my 1700+ after getting a new mobo and at first the mobo was screaming at me and i thought it was because of no kbd/mouse, got it plugged into the monitor and it said the cpu fan wasn't on. so i check the connectors and i'd plugged it into another fan and neither was on. so i plugged it in right and it then said cpu damaged/dead. i was like, no way, a 1700+ doesn't put out so much heat as to not survive 10 seconds without a fan under an mcx462 (the biggest heatsink on the planet). so i unplug it, take it over to the table, switch power plugs on the fans, hit power, and it boots all the way. darnedest thing i ever saw. hasn't had a problem since.

sometimes, i just don't understand computers.

I'm glad that you'll have your machine up running SETI soon.🙂

We are at the bottom of the race and we need all the machines we can get working for our mini-team.

<< I dont wanna do another build again for quite some time. >>

I hope you'll reconsider and build another one as soon as possible.😉
