Need Help Networking Two Computers

HGC

Senior member
I have two computers connected to DSL via a Linksys router. I would like to connect the two to share and backup files. Once in the past I used an internet guide to do this through the router, but I have forgotten how to do it. I also since read that this way of doing it makes makes your files more vulnerable.

1. I have extra NICs. Should I just hook a cable between two NICs other than the ones used to connect to the router? Would I use NETBeui for this?

2. Is there a safe way to network through the router?

3. I read the AnandTech Networking FAQs and Windows XP Home help files, but, as a networking newbie, I am still confused. Can anyone recommend an online guide, or just give a few steps to follow?

Thanks very much!

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I also have an old D-Link hub/switch. Is it better to use this, or can I simply connect the two computers directly or via the router?

If you connect the two computers directly, you will need a cross-over network cable. A normal cable would connect send to send and receive to receive (it would be like holding the telephone receiver upside-down). You want send to receive and receive to send, of course.

However, you should be able to connect the PCs to your home router no problem. A home router is essentially a switch itself with more functions in it. Simply install the NetBEUI protocol, and share out a folder.

This guide might be a bit more helpful:

I wouldnt say you need NetBui though...

Just make sure the IPX/SPX protocol is installed. If you are using Windows XP, you might have to go into the settings for when you share a particular folder, and click "Just enable file sharing" and disregard the security risk, just choose the name the folder will show on your network and if you want to allow any other changes.

Hope that helps.

He should be able to share files through TCP/IP.

Just do the automatic network setup on both machines, using the same workgroup name, and share away.

Thanks for the help guys. I just installed IPX/SPX protocal and ran the wizard. Took about two minutes. I went to ShieldsUp to test my security and the network is invisble to the outside world, so it appears no problems.
