need help networking printers

We have 2 pcs, a HP laser printer, 2 color inkjet (Lexmark & Epson) printers, a cable modem, router, and a scanner.

Right now the router (Netgear RT314) connects modem to the 2 pcs. We have a printer switch (Intelligent AutoSwitch - which is not keeping us happy) connecting the 2 of the printers to the pcs. The usb scanner connects to just one pc.

Our biggest issue is that the printer switch does not "switch" automatically with the pc that's running XP. In order to switch printers for that pc one must walk over to the switch and push a button. That's NOT technology, right?

We're willing to spend maybe $50 on a new switch, but naturally would rather take advantage of the equipment we already have, and network the scanner in the process. (BTW, all of the equipment is in one room.)

Anyone see an easy way to get this done?
