Current Situation:

approx. $50,000/yr working for an IT contracting agency that is ending within the next month
3rd shift (10pm-7am) (Saturday-Wednesday)
I pay for medical insurance @ $130/month out of pocket, with a $500 deductible, $30 copay for office visits and $3,000/yr max out of pocket expense amount.
Decent dental with MetLife is approx $32/month.
Vision is like $4/month and $20,000 Life insurance is like $8/month
401k is offered but with no match
Major holidays are paid, but no sick/vacation days, only that if I am employed with the agency for 1yr. they will give me the equivalent of 1 week's salary.

Current Job Offer:

$50,000/yr salary working directly for a good company + 10% yearly bonus
2nd shift (2pm-11pm) (Sunday-Thursday)***the main drawback for me***
POS in-network medical benefits would be free (no premiums) with no deductible and they would pay 100% of eligible charges with no pre-existing condition limitation. $10 copay per office visit. Max out of pocket $1,000/yr.
PPO in-network would be $38/month with a $250 deductible and they would pay 90% after deductible with a pre-existing condition limitation. $20 copay per office visit. Max out of pocket $1,750/yr.
Dental coverage is free.
Holidays off incl. MLK day, Washington's B-day and Good Friday.
Paid time off of 2 weeks/yr which would increase the 2nd year.
401k matching $1 for $1 up to $4,000/yr.

The main thing for me is that the staffing agency can continue to find me employment within the IT industry, but on a contract or contract to hire basis, so I wouldnt really be growing vertically with any specific company unless I was hired by one. The company that made the job offer wants me to make a 2-yr commitment with them before wanting to change to regular day shift hours. Seems like a big commitment to make being in that I would have like no life when most people are out having fun from 5-11 or so on weekday nights. Also, I recently moved to the city and wanted to expose myself to all it had to offer - nightlife, cultural events, restaurants, etc. Can't really do much of that working until 11pm for 24 straight months.

yah, actually, at least you can get things done throughout the day. Wake up at like 3pm and have approx 7 hrs to hang with friends, go out, run errands etc. If my current workdays were Sunday-Thursday it would definitely be ideal. I mean at least it overlaps for a few daytime/early evening hours with the regularly working world being off work whereas 2nd shift does not.

I love the night. So much more quiet and peaceful, it just suits me so much better, I loved the nights I didn't have to work over the summer. But the second job does look better in benefits, and working 2-11 type shifts for me just seemed to go much faster. Best of luck though.

tough call, I guess on the up side if you are working all the time (2-11), that leaves little time to spend money and by the end of the 2 years you should have a nice little nest egg, but that is about the only positive I can see...I used to work that shift, (actually 2:30PM-1AM) but it was only 4 days a week Mon-Thurs. Loved those 3 day weekends.

I would take the job. Having a job like that for a straight 2 years has to look better for any future jobs then just working on contract. You have a chance to move up in the company maybe later. I would never want to work the 3rd shift. The second shift doesnt sound great but it sounds a lot better then the 3rd..look at it this way.

You get out at 11...i dont know how old u are but at my age (22) everyone is still out and about at that time. The bars are still full and there is still much fun to be had. I love to stay up late so i would have no problem staying up later and then getting up around 11am. You also get friday and saturday to go out and have fun. I dont see the problem with this shift.

That second job seems has great benefits. A dollar-for-dollar 401k match is very rare. If the hours are your only beef and they don't actually interfere with current obligatations, you should jump on it (based on the info presented).

second job FTW. your 401k match will earn you $4K tax-free, your hours are more civil and still give you plenty of time to run errands in the morning.

For the 1st job, is it still 50k if you include the non-paid vacation and the sick time?

Those adds up, 3 weeks of vacation and sick time pay is easily worth 3k.

anyway you can negotiate the time?
If you can't.. then like SpunkyJones said... wait for something that is better fit for you.

3rd shift is awesome! I love working 3rd shift.

The nightlife in a lot of Cities doesn't really start to pick up until 11pm, sounds like you have perfect hours to me!

Edit: I mean the job offer has perfect hours, not your current one.

I'd go for job offer since I've done graveyard shift and it mess me up trying to sleep during the day.
Plus you still have all Friday night and Saturday night to party and benefits looks better with job #2. Put in a year or two and get a normal 9-5 job. Man, those kind of working hours sucks for dating life.

do you have a family/gf/any social responsibilites? with your work schedule, it doesn't sound like it.

having said that, I would take the offer since the pay is comporable and the benefits are good.

thats the conclusion Im coming to, I countered on Friday and told them I needed 52,500 to be able to take the position, not sure if they'll come back with it, maybe I made a mistake. anyone have any experience in job salary negotiations, do they usually say no, we don't want you if the figure is too high, or do they counter and say something like, the highest we can go is 51,000? The headhunter said he was "cautiously optimistic" at this point about me getting that figure.
