hey, heres the gist of it:

my TV has a VGA input, my computer has DVI output

what cable do i buy? im seeing things like DVI-D to DVI-D, and DVI-I and i dont know which I should be getting

as well, should i be buying a vga cable and use an adapter to connect it to the dvi output? or use a dvi cable and use an adapter to connect to the tv?

i would like to avoid a dvi-to-hdmi solution as the i tried that once and found reduced picture quality

thanks!

using a dvi-vga adapter (your gpu should have come with 2) and a vga cable should work, but if you can properly setup the output using a dvi-hdmi cable should give the best results (as it eliminates digital-analog-digital conversion that happens if you use vga). If you don't like the way it looks using hdmi you can try using powerstrip to change the timings and resolution so it fits your display (just be careful as you can cause problems if you use incorrect settings in powerstrip).

So you want to connect both your TV and monitor to your PC?

If your monitor has a DVI port, use that for it. DVI-D is pretty much the standard and will work with your monitor. Your video card should have come with a DVI to VGA adapter that you can use to connect to your TV to the second DVI port.

alright, vga it is! thanks

tried hdmi, subpar results.....vga has so far given me perfect pixel to pixel results

the reason i had to start this thread is that i forgot what cable i used to use; we tore apart my rec room and all cables are in boxes right now. new setup will have tv in one room and computer hidden away in another so i need to buy a 30ft cable online and just got confused as hell over all the different types

thanks again

EDIT: would i find signal problems with a vga cable that's 30 feet long??
