Hello Friends,

This is my first post on anandtech and I hope I could find the answer what is need to know 🙂

I have a cheap graphic card (ZOTAC Nvidia GT 610) and a plasma TV (samsung 51f5500). I want to play 3d content like avatar(in 3D) through my pc via HDMI which is connected to my TV. When I play 3d content I didn't see much depth in 3d. It is like that i watching 2d movie with 3d glasses.

My question is:
is graphic card have any role to play 3d content in 3d TV or it's just a TV 3d engine that only works to play 3d content? If I upgrade my graphic card (AMD/ATI R9 270X 2 GB) will there be any difference in 3d depth while watching movies or anything? M really confused 🙁

Sorry for my bad english though :sneaky:

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Actually there are two ways to watch 3D content when using a PC. You can either use a free media player like Potplayer, in which case you will be seeing a 2D Over/Under or Side-by-side image and then you have to set your TV set to the proper 3D mode. It will then combine the two images to give the 3D image.

Also you can use a player like PowerDVD which will set your TV in 3D mode and play the file as a 3D file. Basically it's the same thing. Very little difference.

So your graphics card would be OK as it only does the decoding. The 3D part resides on the TV. The TV itself does have some 3D options you can set, but I also have a Samsung TV (series 6400) and found the default options to be perfect.

Moreover you can play 3D content directly on your TV. I mean I have connected my hard drive on the TV and play the files directly from it. I just have to use the proper 3D mode O/U or SBS.

A better graphics card would only help you offload your cpu even more and would be crucial if you intended to play some stereoscopic 3D games. Stereoscopic 3D gaming is very demanding. It will basically double the requirement of system resources, but that's another story.

Avatar is one of the better examples of 3D content out there and it really makes me wonder why you don't get the desired effect.

Also try watching the quick gaming 3d video test I uploaded on Youtube a while back.

Set the video on side by side mode, make it full screen and set your tv to side by side mode as well and see if you are getting any 3D effect.

You can aslo download the trial version of Tridef and watch its 3D samples to check the 3D capabilities of your setup.
