Need help installing Xbox One controller on PC please.

I'm having a tough time getting this controller installed. I plug it in and it vibrates. It's not showing in device manage as an xbox controller. It's showing as other devices - controller. I check for updates and it doesn't find an update. I've tried 2 different cables and have plugged it into USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports. I also can't seem to find the driver from Microsoft. Do you all have any suggestions?

Mine was literally plug and play. I suggest uninstalling any drivers that may have installed when you plugged it in, plus any additional drivers that you may have installed for any other controllers you have. Restart & re-plug.

You're on Windows 10?

Are you sure it didn't work and it is just called something else in DM? Might sound like a silly suggetsion but what happens when you try to play a game with it

Thanks. I'm using Windows 8.1. I just tried 3 games and nothing worked.

The driver isn't installing. It goes through the motions but nothing gets installed and when I check for updates in device manager it doesn't find a driver. I did try uninstalling it and replugging it back in and it didn't help. I'll try uninstalling my other 2 controllers.

Edit: Uninstalling and unplugging all three devices didn't help.

The driver download fixed the problem! If major nelson would have left his links up or if microsoft had the downloads in the article I would have fixed this issue two hours ago.

Wow didn't know they made Win 7 drivers for wireless. Thought they were pushing Win10 only.

I prefer the XB1 controller over the 360 controller. I guess if you're happy don't switch just to switch.

Yeh, it was weird. In the middle of it all I started getting BSOD's when flash player would run. I tracked it down to sandboxie which I run in a ram disk. Thankfully updating sandboxie fixed it.

The controller seems to work good. I had been using a logitech dual action so the xbone controller is a nice upgrade.

Ugh so I decided the grab the Xbone controller + wireless adapter. Cannot seem to get this mofo to work wireless though. Anyone done it on Windows 7?

Controller works fine wired.

Wireless adapter installs, shows up in device manager correctly. Under network adapters though? Seems to pair with controller fine, but then controller doesn't work at all. Can't seem to find anything on Google with this issue. May have been due to X360 drivers/software still present?

First time I've tried using it, on business trip currently. Guess I'll try my desktop with Win10 when I get home.

RockinZ28, keep us informed if you do ever figure it out. I have a wireless 360 controller that I use on Win7, but have been debating upgrading at some point to get the extra features available on the Xbone (such as the analog/pressure sensitive buttons/triggers).

Have you ran Windows update to see if it forces a new driver to install like it does on Windows 10?

Yea I just did like 200 updates, still doing the same thing.

Yea don't know wtf is up. Have tried manually installing drivers, letting Win7 automatically fetch drivers. Everything seems to be ok, the controller just does nothing once paired.

Will do, but think I've given up on this laptop. I'll try booting into Windows 7 on my desktop when I get home just to see if it installs easily. Like I said I can't find any mention of someone else with this issue.

Made it home.

Win10: Stick wireless adapter in, auto installed. Turn controller on, working wireless.

Win 7 on desktop: Stick wireless adapter in. Went to device manager, update driver, search internet for driver automatically. Installed, turn controller on, working wireless. I must have auto driver installs disabled, otherwise it should have done it by itself I believe.

On desktop, I do see that the xbox controller itself is labeled "XINPUT compatible HID device" in device manager, and it did pop up a warning about that driver not being digitally signed in Win7. On the laptop, it's named "USB Input device." Tried forcing xbox controller driver installs on it and still wouldn't work. So don't know wtf is up with my pos laptop.
