Need help installing Windows

I just got some parts and tried installing Windows XP on my first SataII drive. The first time, shortly after starting the installation, it couldn't copy a file from the disk. The second time, after formating the drive, it would copy the setup files to prepare for the installation and during that time couldnt copy a file again (named mvdm???.dll). Then on the third try, it couldnt start installation, saying it couldn't find some sort of "verification" on the drive and couldn't continue with the installation. Upon another try, when I try to boot from the Windows disc, I get the error "couldn't boot from CD, <windows root>\system32\hal.dll is corrupt or missing, plz copy this file and try again," and the error remained ever since.
I have now installed a fresh copy of Windows on my spare PATA drive with the Sata lying around without any problems.
The parts I received are the following: AM2 Athlon 3000+, BioStar Tforce 550, 2gb OCZ DDR667 ram, WD Caviar 250gb sata HD (the only IDE cable is split between the CD-rom and PATA drive as I wait on getting a Sata drive in)
Now, I went on ahead on the Windows installation without installing or tinkering with any settings except to check the voltages and detection of the drives (they were fine). Could the problems have been the result of an outdated/broken BIOS, or a faulty drive? The fact that I can install and run Windows now on a PATA drive suggests it's either one of those two. Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

congratulations!!!!
you have now become the one millionth person to ask this question on AT Gen Hard.

As your reward, you will have one week to ask "why is my 200GB HDD only showing up as 130GB?"

Hope that helps!
Enjoy.

O snapz my 2 PATA's on my raid controller aren't showing up yet...I could handle that - ain't so helpless 😉 Well, got Windows running on my Sata. Just had to copy the hal.dll to the folder 😱 It was the sequence of errors that got me worried and so why not try posting here eh?

Hi, If the CD Disc proves to be good then looks like you have a bad CD reader. They can quit reading at any point on the disk and produce symptoms like you describe.

Good Luck, Jim
