Hi guys

I have a brand new system that I'm about to finish up.

I'm going to do a clean install of Windows 2000.

I have a Leadtek GeForce 3, Abit KG7-RAID, 512MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM, X-gamer 5.1 Live, ATI TV Wonder, and a Linksys NIC.

My question is this:

What should I install to make everything work right? I hear that there are problems witht he AMD chipset and Windows 2000 - or something like that? What should I isntall first, and what patches/drivers will I need?

Thanks

Did mine, had no problems at all. Geforce2mx, dual 733's, dual boot.

Just after you get the os installed, head over to via and get the newest 4in1's. The only booger was getting the win-tv card done, but hauppage had some good drivers on the site. Just make sure you get the card recognized before you install the tuner software.

Really surprised me how easily it went.

1. Winzip
2. v4.32 VIA 4in1's
3. Windows 2000 SP2
4. Critical Updates
5. Detonator 3 Drivers
6. Whatever you want

I have to get VIA drivers too???

Link me? Thanks =)

Here is my plan as of right now:

1). Install Windows 2000, hit F7 when first screen comes up to install STANDARD PC
2). Install AMD Driver Pack 1.20
3). Install Sound Card, NIC, and ATI TV Wonder Drivers - NOT GeForce 3 drivers
4). Install programs/applications - setup Network!
5). Install SP2
6). Install Direct X 8.0
7). Install Windows 2000 AGP Mini-Port Driver
8). Install Windows 2000 largepageminimum.reg file
9). Install Detonator 3 12.41 drivers
10). Run Windows Update and d/l stuff (security crap)
11). Swet Swapfile
12). Run scandisk
13). Defrag

Let me know about any changes I should make.

I have an ABIT KG7-RAID, I know it has the AMD 761? Northbridge and the VIA something southbridge

I still need to get the AMD Driver pack + the VIA 4-in-1 ??

No, no, no...they are incorrect..sort of.

This is the best way to do it..

1. Format and install OS
2. Install the latest Via Via 4-in-1 Drivers except the AGP driver.
3. Install the latest AMD AGP Miniport Drivers
4. Install Sound, Video, and any remaining hardware drivers
5. Update OS

You need the Via drivers for the southbridge (686B), and you need the AGP drivers from AMD for the northbridge. Do not install Via's AGP driver. Also, it's important to install the 4-in-1's and the AGP drivers before the soundcard and video card drivers. Good luck and feel free to send me a private message if you need more help with setup. :)

Don't forget the registry fix from AMD, that one isn't included in the service packs.

Where is this AMD registry patch available? Does it just apply to 76x chipsets or Athlon CPUs as well?

Also, which is preferable? Installing sound/video drivers and then DirectX or DirectX first?

I always install DX8a first.

"You mean the largepageminimum.reg thingy?"

I wouldn't worry about that patch unless you have problems. I have set up a few 8K7A's with Win2K and I have had no problems without any extra patches. If you read the description for what it fixes, it only happens in rare cases under certain operating conditions. You should be fine without it. :)

"But the VIA drivers are needed also?"

Yes. The KG7 is a hybrid board. It uses a AMD Northbridge and a Via 686B Southbridge. You need the Via drivers except for the AGP driver for the Via Southbridge. You need AMD's AGP driver for the Northbridge. :)

Everything looks good except #3. The AMD driver pack is just the AGP driver you are going to use in step #4 plus drivers for the AMD southbridge that your board does not have. :)

So what you're saying:

don't install the Driver Pack
Install the AGP Mini-Port
Install the VIA 4-in-1 ??

Correct. The AMD driver pack is essentially the equivalent of the via's 4-in-1 drivers. It includes the AGP driver for northbridge, and other drivers for the AMD southbridge. Your KG7 does not have a AMD southbridge...only the northbridge so all you need from AMD is the AGP driver. You need the 4-in-1's minus the AGP driver because you have a Via southbridge and you do not have a via northbridge. That is why I referred to the board as a Hybrid. It has a AMD northbridge and a Via southbridge. Does that make sense?
