I just received the retail version of the Epox 8K7A and the AMD T-Bird 1.4GHz cpu. I also have the Arctic Silver 2 thermal paste. Could someone explain to me in step by step form, how to apply these properly? I want to make sure i don't fry my cpu on the first boot up.

Where do I apply the thermal paste? which side of cpu and do i smear it all over?

Also, do i apply anything else?

ok, now i am supposed to remove this sticker thing on the cpu right?

Any particular way to know if the heatsink is applied properly?

ANything else i should know?

thanks

Take that sticker thing off the socket on the mobo (the warning). Take the sticker and any thermal pad off the bottom of the HSF. Clean the bottom of the hsf with some acetone. What kind of HSF are you using? It may need to be lapped (smoothed) with some fine grit wet sandpaper.

Apply a THIN (and I mean thin, practically transparent) layer of Arctic Silver to the core of the CPU (the little raised part in the middle of the die). You barely need any AS2. Oh, and use a plastic bag or any piece of loose plastic to spread the AS2 on the core, don't use your bare finger. Thats a big no-no.

Thats the only place you need to apply the Arctic Silver to. When putting on the HSF make sure the tab on the socket matches the space on the HSF. When attaching the clips of the hsf onto the socket(this part WILL get intense) make sure that there is ALWAYS steady, even pressure applied to the hsf. If the hsf rocks either way, you might crack the core and destroy your CPU (I did ;))

The heatsink is the one provided by AMD. THanks for your help. I hope this works!

I believe you don't need ASII for a stock heatsink since there are some thermal compound on the sink already. That pink stuff is sticky and not that easy to get rid of.

If you dont intend to OC, that AMD fan will be fine. Otherwise, you should invest in a better cooler...Taisol CGK 742092, 760092, GlobalWin WBK/FOP series...Thermalright SK6, and others

again, if you intend to OC, scrape off the thermal pad...dont scratch the base of the hSF though. After you scratch it off, clean it with some acetone (nail polish remover) or rubbing alcohol...then, if the base is uneven, lap it. Then, apply the ASII as mentioned earlier...for a more complete guide, goto the Arctic Silver website.

Lastly-if u dont intend to OC, the thermalpad/AMD HSF will be fine...otherwise they wouldnt have offered it.

Note: NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER use BOTH the pad and the grease...this is a HUGE NO-NO. You have been warned :)
