Need help installing a PCI video card in a compaq 7360

My friend has a compaq 7360 which has an onboard video card. The mobo is based on a Via chipset (not sure which one). The problem is that he wants to install my old PCI Maxi Gamer Cougar 32mb TNT2 video card. There is no option in the BIOS to disable the video card, and none of the info at compaq works for him. The video will not go through the TNT2, only through the onboard graphics card. This is really frustrating, and I don't know what to tell him to do. DAMN YOU COMPAQ!!:|

Okay, but do you think the work around would work for him---does he have this option in his bios?

How can I make a PCI add-in video adapter the primary display adapter?
If an add-in PCI video card is used, then the integrated AGP video solution is still active. The AGP and PCI video solutions will be available for multiple monitor support. When both PCI and AGP video solutions are available, the primary output can be selected in the BIOS. In the BIOS setup program, the Primary Video Adapter feature in the Advanced, Video Configuration menu can be changed from AGP (the default) to PCI.

That's the first thing I had him try...there's no option in the BIOS. He even downloaded the latest BIOS version and flashed it.

Sorry dude, from the sounds of it, it's time for a new system 🙁 Wish I could have helped you and your friend out 🙁

I'll admit that I'm being lazy and have not checked the links to see what they suggest, but since you indicated that you tried all of that, anyway, it probably doesn't matter.

Compaq used to be very good about putting a system schematic inside the lids or side panels of their cases. Check and see if there might be a jumper or dipswitch that needs to be changed to use on-board video. Some of the early Pentiums had that setup, so it might be possible that they still were using that on this system. Good luck!

Is there some way that I can create a custom BIOS to flash? I remember seeing a program a while ago that customized bios ROMs so that you could flash them.

Nope, Compaq's website says that there are no jumpers for the onboard video card. When a PCI video card is put into the computer, the onboard AGP video card is supposed to be automatically disabled. It seems like no matter what happens with the onboard video card, there should at least be a signal from the video card. Could the video card be damaged?

first pci slot can create problems with agp, try putting the card in like slot 2, also have you tried deleting the video adapter in windows (the onboard one) does the pci card show up in device manager? Also do you have the latest via 4 in 1's?

no, it doesn't show up

will the 4 in 1's work with a Compaq?
