Z71v
The barebones laptop is an Asus; although it's not flashy, it's got some very good reviews, and much like almost everything Asus makes, it seems to be of very high quality. The graphics card is a 6600, although it's upgradeable. And, lastly, JNCS has some nice reviews at reselleratings.
There's all sorts of options on this laptop, but you're better off buying and installing the RAM yourself. It's easy to do, and the RAM will be something like half as much.

if you are going for an asus, go for the v6v....uses ddr2, and some other nice features. looks beautiful (far better than even an ibook)

Yea, gotta go with phreak here, a $1500 budget is a fairly decent budget. You've narrowed it down to no games and the fastest you can get, but there are other considerations. Why don't you tell us what you plan to do on the notebook and where you plan on using it mostly.

The Z71V uses DDR2-533, weighs only about a pound more, and has a far superior graphics card. It's not quite as nice looking, though.

EDIT:
Z71v config at 1481$ (I'd throw in another 50$ for a 512mb stick of DDR2 for the laptop, giving you 768mb total.)
40GB hard drive
1.73 Ghz Pentium-M
B/G wireless card
Windows XP home (costs 120$ less without it)
Combo drive
Mobile 6600 graphics card.
