I want to purchase a new computer, but I like the idea of a barebones computer deal.

Now I have a few questions. The whole process seems pretty easy, buy a bare bones computer, buy the other parts.

I have stumbled on a few sites

This one
http://www.cheap-computers-guide.com/build-your-own-computer.html

and a few others

My questions Where Can I find a reliable place to research a barebones computer? DO any of you build your own computers?

Where are the best deals?

Basically I want to know everything... and I want to build the computer by the end of next week. Thanks for the replys.

i build my own computers and usually frys has the best deals on barbones but at the same time they usually do not offer the mobo i'm looking for. so when i buy all the components i want seperately, it only comes out to be a bit more than the barebones systems but i get the mobo of my choice. if you can build a whole system from barebones, you can prolly build a system completely

Welcome! AT Forums is a good start. A quick Google search brought up this site:Build a Personal Computer for the beginner.

There are really only a few basic parts to a PC (for the beginning builder, anyway). The trick is knowing what parts to get and how they go together. The knowing what to get is the hard part. Putting it together can be done by a six-year-old. For my first build, it took me a couple of weeks to decide what to buy. It took a few hours to put it together. I can build one in less than an hour now...heck, it takes more time to open up those darn blister packs than to actually assemble the components.

You need to decide how much you want to spend, and what you want to use the PC for. If you're an avid gamer, you'll need to blow a lot more money on a video card, than if you're just a websurfer/word-processor user.

Buy a Dell. Seriously. With the deals that Dell has every few days, you can easily purchase a basic desktop for less than it would cost to build, especially after you factor in the cost of software....$350-$450 for a 2ghz+ pentium seems like a reasonable expectation. Building your own is the way to go when you need every bit of extra speed that careful RAM, CPU, and motherboard selection can net you.

As for assembling a computer, to be honest, even the worst motherboard manual will have every instruction necessary for physically assembling the computer. The only reason you see so many "help, my computer won't post" posts here is because people don't read those instructions :)
