Need help....Im running two routers and am getting "request timed out"

Im using two linksys 4 port router/switches.Im using one as a router and switch and the other as a switch only(connected to the uplink port of the 1st router).

My problem is after some time, say 5-10 minutes, my connections are lost and i have to restart the router to be able to get back online again. Ive tried the latest firmware for both routers(actually swapped them) and am still getting disconnections.

Please le tme know if there are any suggestions you can give me.Thanks!

I don't know if this is your problem, but try disabling dhcp on the 2nd router (in general, try to kill any of the non-switch features that happen to be on the router).

Also, does the problem only occur when both routers are hooked up? Just make sure it is really a problem with the routers.

Ive already done what you told me about disabling the dhcp on the 2nd router...anything else i need to switch off??

Basically what im trying to do is to make the 2nd router act only as a switch,right?

The second one is connected via a switch port right? Not the WAN. In other words you have a router with 3 ports open, and the second one with only 3 ports open.

Yeah...I actually have the 1st routers port numbers 4,3 and 2 running directly to the computers and the uplink port connected to port 4 of the 2ndrouter(non-dhcp enabled ).

Trouble is i still am getting time-outs and also have a new problem crop up.:|

While pinging a site continously, like "ping 168.143.107.76 -t".....it will run them fine, then al of a sudden i get dumped to either a "timed out" or a " 192.168.1.1 destinationnet not reachable" reading...what gives???

Again, just to be clear, are you problem free when using only one of the routers? You're sure it isn't a problem with your dsl service, or maybe even one of your pcs? If it is a problem with the routers, it wouldn't surprise me if one of them would cause the same problem all by itself, without being hooked up to the other router. You might also try changing the cable that connects the routers -- it might be the sourse of the problem.

Once ive set the routers up...all pcs connected to the 1st and 2nd router show up, so im pretty sure the wires and cables are ok.
It might be my connection, but i doubt it.
And strangely enough, if i use only one router and connect 4 PC's on it, i have a good, continous connection(last time i tried it)...i never encountered this problem till recently when i connected the second router to accomodate the 5th pc at home.

Get a switch or a hub. Connect it to the router's uplink port and sell the second router. It might be cheaper then getting an 8 port router. You might need a crossover cable though.

I actually had a linksys 5 port switch that was acting flaky already, till i killed it with the wrong voltage

its quite a strange problem, but hopefully theres a better solution than buying an 8 port router

What is the IP address of the second router? If it is still the default IP address of 192.168.1.1 you may be getting problems from having 2 devices with the same IP address.

.....If that doesn't work try turning off DHCP all togeather and use static address.

when you are getting request timed outs.. can you still ping through the routers?

ex. Router 1: 192.168.0.1
Router 2: 192.168.0.2

ping -t 192.168.0.1 (on a machine off of the .2 router)

The second router should not have an IP at all, if you can disable NAT and DHCP. A switch does not have an IP, and niether should this second router, if you can configure it correctly.
If you cannot, sell it and get a regular switch or hub, it is not worth the headache.

I disagree.. I have several switches with IPs.

Routers should have an IP or it cannot route. (TCP/IP anyway)
