Need help identifying a book I remember as a child

The one picture I remember clearly is a lump under the carpet that comes out and moves back and forth and the people who lived in the house tries to kill it by hitting it.

The point is that the lump is not seen and it's supposed to scare a child by playing on their imaginations. The entire book is like that. And I think the author is famous for these types of books. It kinda reminds me of Hans Christian Anderson, but I couldn't find the book from his stuff.

Any ideas? Thanks.

hmmm, I seem to remember a book, not pop-up though, that dispelled the night-time fears: like that ghost on the wall was actually your socks hanging on a hook, etc. I remember the art very well.
