Need help "hiding" seti

OK here's the deal. I have several computers I had SETI and SETIdriver installed on. THey were win2000 boxes and I had setidriver installed as service using firedaemon. This kept them relatively invisible to the general user. I chose Setidriver since these are on a network without internet connection. Well one of the machines had a problem where the mouse slowed down. That was the only thing being affected. Everything else was working fine. Well the user opened taskmanager and saw seti running at 99% cpu and blamed that so I had to remove it. Low and behold the mouse is still messing up. haven't figured that one out yet.

Well here is my question. Is there a way to set up seti with offline caching as a service and hide it from taskmanager? I will apreciate any help given.

Doesn't SETIHIDE have a function to pause SETI when another program runs, too? You could set it to pause SETI if they open the Task Manager.

I just setup one of my new teammates on TS with SetiHide. He only has a 56K connection and is not online all the time. I'm actually in the testing phase (computer is still on my build bench) to see how it works out. There is no evidence in the tray that anything is running but if you do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and go to the Windows Task Manager you see setiathome-3.03 etc. running using about 98 - 99 percent of the CPU. So that may answer part of your question Bryan. 🙁

I read that the next version of SetiHide is supposed to contain an option to run it as a service. They better get a move on because the SETI program, as we now know it, may be over before they get that new version ready for prime time. 🙂

One thing I noticed that I did not like was a change in the SetiHide program from previous versions. The option to start on Windows Startup or Computer bootup or whatever was blank. The only way to get it to run automatically was to put a shortcut in the Startup folder. I need to investigate that a little more because that sort of ruins the "hidden" aspect if it shows up in the Startup Folder.

Just double-checked and RaySun2Be is correct. There is that option.

e "halt_if_running.txt" file

I need to give that a try. 😉

Edit: Couldn't find where to do that? I'd like to try that feature if someone can tell me how to do it.

Smokeball,
Here is how to use the halt_if_running file:

6.1.3 The "halt_if_running.txt" file
Enter path and filename of any application that is supposed to pause the SETI client. Recommended for disk defraggers, scan disk utilities or even taskmgr.exe on NT... ;-)
e.g.:
c:\windows\defrag.exe
c:\windows\scandskw.exe

I found the info Here Go to the Installation Link, then the Manual link. Tells you all ya need to know 😀

Ok I tried setihide and have it running invisible and stopping seti when taskmanager is opened. Now is there a way to set this up without using firedaemon? I would prefer to not use this but will if there is no other choice. I really appreciate the help guys.

Don't know about using something else to install it as a service, however I did read on the site that they are planning to be able to install it as a service in a future release. 🙂

I think the only way SetiHide will start with Windows is under Win98 I believe. Also if you want to hide this a little better from the average person, rename Setihide to command and rename setiathome-3.03 to cmd. Then under the settings tab of SetiHide set the seti client program name to cmd. By clicking on it you can point the your cmd (setiathome-3.03) program. Then put the shortcut for command in the start menu and change the icon to a something else. This is what I did for a computer at work. They just didn't want to see anything out of the ordinary. I also use the halt if running feature and it works like a champ!

Here's a little trick i use on a computer at work to run ECCp:

Put the shortcut in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\ folder, and right click on it, go to Properties, then change it to "Start Minimised" and also tick the box that says Hidden.

Now, you won't be able to see it in the Startup folder on the Start Menu 😀😉

Works like a charm with the Statsaholic ECCp client set to hide the Taskbar icon! 😀 So should work the same with SetiHide as well 🙂

Of course, this needs the user (or any user) to be logged on, so if they don't stay logged on then it won't be as good as a service, but it's close enough 🙂

Thanks for the ideas guys. Problem is most of the day no one is logged in. I will just use firedaemon it is th equickest and easiest thing to set up.
