I currently own i7 920 with a gigabyte ex58 extreme mobo and 6gb corsair dominators triple channel kit. I have it at 3.8ghz but I cant seem to get it stable. Anybody can give me a few advices?

can you supply us with some more information on your voltages and ram timing?

edit:

and by not stable what do you mean? freezes? bsod 124? bsod 101? bsod 110? other bsod?

bclk: 190
multiplier: 20x
qpi link speed: x36
dram: 6x 1140mhz
unclk: 13x
timing: 8-8-8-24 1T
vcore: auto
qpi/vtt: auto
dram: auto

I get the bsod on prime95 i'm not sure which BSOD
:p

bsod codes are helpful... sometimes...

in general if you get a 124 code then your vtt needs to be raised (from whatever setting auto set's it at)
in general if you get a 101 code then your vcore needs to be raised (from whatever setting auto set's it at)
in general if you get a 110 code then it is related to your GPU and your IOH most likely needs to be raised

I would also try relaxing your memory timing a bit to 9-9-9-24 until you get your overclock stable just to rule it out as an issue. also check out your memory voltage specs, or post up a link to your ram.

my guess is that your vcore needs to be raised some and maybe your vtt needs to be raised some. Your ram is running fairly slow, so my money is on vcore

if you follow the 124/101 guidelines then you should be able to find a stable point. Just remember raise it one notch at a time and try to do this all in the bios (opposed to doing it with software tools).

As you get higher and higher in the blck's you may need to raise your qpi pll voltage a hair also (for me once i got past 195 i had to raise it to 1.20). Some people, like me, have had better luck with lower multipliers and higher bclk's (i.e 19x200 vs 20x190 vs 21x180 etc...)

when i say VTT i am referring to the CPU VTT. I am 100% you do have a setting for it

i cant find the cpu vtt
all i have is qpi vtt and qpi/vtt

I left the qpi/vtt auto

well i looked at your setting on ur sig and i see if i can do it with your setting it boot but i dunno haha

i only change the qpi vtt to 1.2v and vcore to 1.31875 and dram to 1.66v
My overvoltage led is on for my cpu which is on at level 2 over voltage lol

hmm... that is very weird. i'm not sure which VTT you are suppose to change. Maybe someone else knows or is familar with the GA board can chime in.

as far as following what I have in my sig, remember no 2 chips are the same. Usually the same batch can perform under similar conditions but even then it is the luck of the draw.

good luck, and keep us posted on your progress or issues

Try an odd multiplier.

My 940 behaves much better with an odd multiplier. 20*200 won't even POST where 21*200 does!

so far stable for 3hr in prime95 blend test with temp at 78c

Interesting. Is there a reason for this?

I'm sure there is and would like to know but it has been my experience.

would this be safe?

1.4-1.45v is very high IMHO, I would not go past 1.31-1.35 for 24/7 use.

1.40 VTT is also pretty high (eqv of +300 for me). Intel states the max should never go past 1.35V, but they also say never to overclock, so take that for what it is worth. You shouldn't need that much VTT for running the ram at 1200MHz. I would be surprised if you needed more then 1.20-1.25 at the most.

I would reduce the overclock if I were you to maybe 3.6ish area (19x190). Among the other things I mentioned, 78C at load isn't ideal either (I'm at 62-63C @ load on the highest temp core).

remember the avg overclocks on air vary from 3.4-3.8 (safe 24/7 overclocks). Some chips are just better overclockers... what batch is your chip? How long have you had it? Have you burned it in at all?

I just have it at 3.8ghz but with ht off but also still getting the bsod :p i guess my chip is pretty shitty
