need help getting a game controller to work with pc

Ok so I got a PS2 controller and a USB converter (this one) that allows it to be hooked up to a PC. I then installed the driver software and all seems to be well. However, how do I get this pad to work in PC games? Do most games not support game pads? Specifically, I'm trying to get it to work in Doom 3 and NFSU2 demo. In the latter, none of the buttons on the controller have any effect, but when the car is rolling (using keyboard keys), the force feedback is in effect. Also, if I modify the settings in the drivers, I'll get a stupid WinXP SP2 "Data Execution Prevention" error saying windows closed the following program: Run a DLL as an App. Maybe this has something to do with it. How do I disable DEP for certain applications? Help, anyone?
 
Considering how you're a "Platinum Member", I doubt my advice will be helpful to you, but... what sort of a device is your Dualshock2 showing up as? Is it a game controller, or some other type of device?

Even if it is a game controller, many games do not support game controllers.

You could also try turning on Analog mode on the Dualshock 2, which may make it look more like a normal USB gamepad to the software you're trying to make it work with.

i have a psx to usb adaptor from Radioshack my stuff works fine but then again i have SP1 not 2 so i am not familiar with that error, the game i used to test my PSX controller is in MVP Baseball 2003, are you sure you want to use a controller for DOOM 3?keyboard and mouse probably better or i think you are just testing it
 
I'm just testing it, and I'd like to use it with some games just for fun. I need to figure out how to disable DEP for that application; I think that might solve my problem. The controller is a dual shock one, forgot the brand name (it's at home, I'm at work and I don't remember off the top of my head).
 
Doubt you will care about this but you can get a Gravis gamepad pro which is almost identical to the PS2 except for the analog sticks... for real cheap. Like $10 cheap. Having said that, I bet those analog sticks would be pretty good for Doom 3 which is probably why you want to use the PS2 controller.
Needless to say I'm a keyboard & mouse guy. I used to play Duke Nukem 3D using a gamepad though and was fairly successful. Now i couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a controller in an FPS game.
 
I didn't this for any particular game, just games in general, to see how they play on a controller.

I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong though. Do I have to enable the controller in the application, or is windows supposed to recognize it as a "transparent" controller, i.e. you can use your keyboard, for instance, or the controller.
 
ok I figured out how to disable DEP, but that didn't really have any effect. The only game that has any bearing on the controller is Half Life 1, and even with the joystick enabled in that all I can do is move around. No shooting, no aiming, to looking; just moving.

I am in the mindset of the gentleman above who suggested that I doubt my puny knowledge can help u! 🙂

If its showing up in the Game Controllers window in Control Panel, everything else is beyond me unless it needs specific drivers. Sorry bro!
 
Why in the WORLD would you rather use the PS2 controller for Half Life? You already have the world's best FPS controller sitting on your desk. It's called a mouse. Don't be afraid.
