What are the price points for the haswell architecture going to look like? Because if it's going to be a very expensive upgrade, maybe it would be a better route to go with SB/IB in the meanwhile. I am looking to get the best future proof workhorse I can while realizing that yes, future proofing is not ever possible in computer hardware.

Oh and also, as far as getting a 7950 by selling the 6970 unlocked... What is around the bend for ATI and NVidia and what are the price points looking like? Is there anything of note coming out soon that would be worth waiting for?

Well I figured I should update the situation...
got the 212 evo, which was a pain in the ass to install... 2 hrs later, (LOL)
:thumbsdown::D:D:D
I'm at 4.0 at stock voltage. Getting 49 c in DayZ
I havent stressed test it yet, I plan to tonight.

I was idling around 29..31 bouncin back and forth.

Is this decent?

And the performance difference so far is... Well a BIG DIFFERENCE LOADING in dayz.
And my frame smoothness is much better too.:D:D:D:D:D

Intel generally keeps prices at similar levels, going as far back as original Core 2 Duo.

E6300 = $183 -> Quad core i5 processor non-K (such as Core i5 3450, 3470)
E6400 = $216 -> Quad core i5 K unlocked (such as Core i5 2500K, i5 3570K)
E6600 = $316 -> Quad core i7 K unlocked (such as Core i7 2600K, i7 3770K)
E6700 = $530 -> Core i7 6-core 3930K

The actual price ranges barely change (maybe +/- $5-10).

So you can just imagine Haswell Core i5 locked for $183-195, Core i5 unlocked K for $216-230, Core i7 K for $316-340, something like that. In other words Haswell won't cost you more than SB/IVB. Of course since SB is older now, you can find 2500K for $159.99 at MicroCenter, $30 cheaper than i5 3570K. However, if you intend to keep your system for a while (which you seem to do), I think it's worth it that you wait 6 more months with this system and just get a faster GPU for now. If you sell the 6970 while it still has value and grab a good 7950, it should overclock to 1150mhz. That's a good value upgrade after reselling your current card without spending a lot of $.

what 5of performance upgrade are we talking from a i5 3570k to the haswell platform?
are we talking like... 10%???

Probably 10% in performance per clock and maybe higher overclocking headroom. It's the overclocking headroom I am looking forward to since IVB has a solder problem that prevent it from overclocking as well as SB on air without delidding. If you will keep the CPU at stock speeds, then get the i5 3570K.

My main suggestion is if the performance in ArmaII is bothering you this much, you'll need a new GPU anyway since 6970 isnt' fast enough. Why don't you just buy the 7950, overclock it and then if it's still too slow, then you can go ahead and sell the CPU and get i5 3570K? If the GPU alleviates some of your performance issues then you can ride out until Haswell. Does that sound like a reasonable approach to minimize you wasting $?

HD7950 @ 1150mhz will be as fast as a 1050mhz HD7970 GE. HD7970 GE is 70% faster than a 6970 in ArmaII:
http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/grafikkarten/2012/test-amd-radeon-hd-7950-mit-925-mhz/17/

What you can also do is disable MSAA in Arma II and see if your performance improves. If it does, you are GPU limited and would benefit from a 7950 OC in this game. The benchmarks show that you will and an X4 @ 4.0ghz + 7950 OC should give you about a 50-60% performance increase.

WHat about ivy bridge vs. sandy bridge? If I wanted to air overclock, should I go for a sandy bridge?

Not much difference in performance. This is because generally SB overclocks better but IVB has about 5% faster performance per clock. IVB will consume slightly less power overclocked:

Have you not upgraded the GPU yet? How come you don't want to dump the 6950 and upgrade the GPU first? Are you thinking that Arma II is more CPU than GPU limited?

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2012/01/31/amd-radeon-hd-7950-3gb-review/4

1080P + AA
6990 = 89 fps
7970 = 75 fps
7950 = 64 fps
6970 = 55 fps
6950 2GB = 48 fps

HD7950 + OCing!!!
