Hey guys I have a chance to get a Qx6850 ES and was wondering if they OC any better then a Q6600 Go Stepping?
Right now I have my Q6600 Go at 9x360 for 3.2Ghz 24/7 run.
Also wondering if all Qx6850's are GO stepping??
Thanks for the help guys..

In all probability, YES. But there are no guarantees in the O/C world.

As long as you're paying a fair price for the QX6850, then it's not much risk, you could always turn around and sell it again if it didn't live up to expectations. I would think that 3.6Ghz is probably doable with excellent cooling. Not sure about your mobo though. And you'll probably have to run that G. Skill a little loose on the higher FSBs.

What are your realistic goals? Hit 3.6GHZ 24/7? 3.8GHz? >4Ghz? It depends on what you want.

If you only want to hit ~3.6, you could by 2-3 Q6600 G0's and test to see which one does the best.

If you are looking at much over 3.6-3.8, then I would think you do better with the QX, but probably need water (or similar) cooling to get those high clock speeds.

Not at this point, no.

The Yorkfield Quads are hitting the streets imminently, and $600 would net you at least a QX9550 (2.83Ghz Stock, 12MB L2, 1333FSB, 45nm technology, and so on.)

Even $316 will snag you a 9450, with the same 12MB L2, same new tech.

Personally, I'd recommend going with the 9450, some better memory, and a better board and cooler. With the right setup, ~3.6-3.8Ghz should be a normal/high OC for the 9450.

The ES QX6850 is pretty nice, but the Yorkfield for less $$$ just makes sense. Your 3.2Ghz Q6600 is no slug, btw, and the performance difference between it and a QX6850 @ 3.6+Ghz isn't that large.

Awesome and thanks as thats what I needed to know.
You just saved me 600.00 bucks then.
I will just pocket the cash and wait for the Q9450 12MB L2 Cach with the new sse4.
I was really debating between the 2 anyways.
I also know that My system is no slug I can run it much faster more like 9x400 but this system has to last me as it is my main every day rig.
So for now I am happy with 9x360.

You forgot to mention the locked multipliers.

Q9450 = 8x Multi
Q9550 = 8.5 Multi
QX9650 and higher = Unlocked.

So if he wants to try for 4.0Ghz or higher on a Q9450 he's gonna need to overclock some ram to DDR2 1000+ or have DDR2 1066 memory on hand(which he seems to have according to his sig).

Anyway, thought I'd mention that.

True, though with the 1333 FSB C2Q's, running sync w/o DDR3 isn't really doable, so he'll be running some memory divider or another. I did suggest getting some new decent DDR2, as G-Skill DDR2-800 is not exactly great for extreme overclocking. But running DDR2@1000 with maybe 4-5-4-12 should be doable with the right memory. Hell even 5-5-5-15 would suffice @ those speeds.

Obviously the QX9650 would be the best solution, but it's prohibitively expensive. So, that leaves the 9450/9550 as the contenders. Personally, I'd save $200, and put that savings into better ram/mobo/cooling/video.
