OK... Don't forget that taking the subway to Brooklyn is fun part of the New York experience. You haven't really seen the "real" New York until you get outside of lower Manhattan.

I did go to a Yankees game last time I was there, in the last year of the old stadium, so I did get to experience the train out to the Bronx I guess? That and MoMA are pretty much the only things I remember from the trip.

Too lazy to quote, chasing kid all day. I'm not a huge fan of oldschool steakhouses either. I'm all for something nice, but it's almost as if the word stuffy was invented to describe the traditional steakhouse. Steak isn't "wear a jacket" food for me. I will confess to liking a la carte menus, though, especially if a 5+ course tasting menu was in my recent history.

I think the thing about the ultra inventive category of restaurant is that after a while, it all blends together, especially if you go to a bunch of them in a short period of time. For the most part, the restaurants we're talking about here are all really damn good, and in the end you won't be disappointed with whatever 2-3 you actually get in to.

I know that a couple of them - Per Se and Le Bernardin, I think, have a pretty good relationship with Amex and might hold a couple of tables for their concierge service. Try that avenue if you can. I'm about to do that for my wife once she gets back to me on what nights she can get out for dinner in SF.

This Portland is in Maine (the other is closer to you, I think). My wife swears I convinced her to move here for the food. I don't think that's entirely true, but I can live with it as a justification, that's for sure.

Tripadvisor seems to lean towards the boutique hotels. For example their top rated hotel is The Casablanca Hotel http://www.casablancahotel.com/ , I almost booked it semi-blind looking at the reviews there, but after looking closer at the place it seems kind of cheesy. I don't know.

I did pop in to the Natural History Museum last time I was there, but do not remember any of it. I was planning on going for at least half a day, but we'll see.

I appreciate your input as you're right, I think we have similar tastes, at least in food. :)

My top three to try and get to are:

1. Per Se - since I went to, and loved, TFL several years ago I've been dying to go here.
2. Le Bernardin
3. Eleven Madison Park

Then maybe some smaller places while I'm there. I like the idea of maybe hitting Les Halles for lunch; grabbing a quick steak-frites or something. Craft sounds good too, but not sure I will have time. I thought there was some crazy steak place in New York that is really good? I can't remember the name. I don't think it was Peter Luger, but maybe? :hmm:

Cool, I like the idea of that cheese place and I am totally down for chicken and waffles. Been wanting a good one for a while.

I really prefer to walk as much as possible, but I would guess most places I can take a short subway ride to, I could also easily walk to without issue?

What's the burger joint people like out there? Shake Shack or Steak 'n' Shake? Or maybe it's something else?

KT

If you are down for chicken and waffles, definitely try Clinton St. Baking Co. It is one of my favorite places to eat with friends and is light on the wallet.

I heard some talk about steakhouses, I would recommend Club A Steakhouse and Staghorn Steakhouse. Peter Luger is in Brooklyn and you may not want to trek all the way out there. If it's like a 10-15 minute train ride within the Manhattan limits, you can walk to in the same amount of time. If it's more than that, take the train.

You can walk from anywhere to anyplace in NYC, but if you do that you'll spend more time walking than actually visiting places. Well, if you plan it very carefully I'm sure you could walk all over town without taking the train. But based on what you want to do, you'll end up walking only to stand/walk some more, then walk to another destination to stand/walk some more.

Try Shake Shack at Madison Square Park. It's like the east coast equivalent of in-n-out, although I'm sure most Californians would crucify me for blasphemy :p

Totally agree with you on the steak thing; no way I want to dress up to just go for a big meat slab. Vancouver is weird though, you don't need to dress up for anything, even the finest places in town. Very relaxed here.

I did wonder whether I would get into sort of a blended experience going to three tasting places in a row like that. We'll see how it plays out; maybe I will only get into or go to two of them. Still early days for that part of things, I just want to gather as much information as possible right now. Will book the hotel very soon though.

I am definitely down for chicken and waffles, so I've made a note of that place.

Thanks for the other steak houses. I took a look at Peter Luger and it does not look worth the trip to me, so I may just try one of the closer places.

I'm not a big In-n-out guy, but I love a good burger. I think Shake Shack is the one I've always heard about, but maybe I'm wrong.

I understand the walking part, but how I operate when on vacation is I generally wake up early (before 8:00 AM) and head out the door, walking around the city for the entire day only loosely having things planned (unless I absolutely need tickets or reservations). So that's why I am beating the walking thing, I love to just walk from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, really getting a feel for the city.

Well that would be nice, but I don't really know anyone in New York.

If you're going to be around for Sunday brunch I would recommend going to 44 & x. It's located in hell's kitchen which isn't too far from times square. I took my wife back in february and she still won't stop talking about it.

If you're really fond of walking, walk over the Brooklyn bridge to get to Brooklyn. Great walk.

I am a huge walker. I had no idea you could even do that. Sounds like a plan, thanks!

If you have a camera on you, make sure you stop by the Brooklyn Heights Promenade after crossing the bridge. I lived about 20 minutes walking distance from there for most of my childhood and teen years, great view of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Also a great opportunity to get some brick oven pizza. :)

If you have time to take a train or buses, you should hit Coney Island at night and get some hot dogs at the original Nathan's (still the best, in my humble opinion) and have a good walk on the boardwalk, go on some rides, etc.

I probably won't have a dedicated camera with me, just my phone. That sounds nice though.

Is it big floppy slices like Louis CK eats at the beginning of Louie?

I didn't realize Coney Island was still a viable place to visit. I just always think of the Godspeed You! Black Emperor song which is awesome, but kind of depressing.

For the most part, yes. You know it's a good place if the slices are dripping with oil and are so big you need to fold them... Which is standard prwctice, anyway. :D

Sweet, bookmarked, thanks. Momofuku seems kind of impossible to get into, but I've been reading about it for years and would love to try it.

Did you find a good meatball parm?

KT

they were booked up leading to my vacay but I scored a rezzie the week of. Last minute cancellation I bet.

haven't had a good meatball parm since I was in jersey 5+ years ago.

Did you go yet? Always wondered what a 3 star michelin restaurant was like....

Not yet. Le Bernardin is next Thursday then Eleven Madison Park on Friday night. Pretty excited. I'll post some notes after I go.

My invite must have gotten lost in the mail. I heard you were picking up the check?
