Norton Utilities, System Works 2000 & 2001 have disk doctor program that can be run from DOS. If you have Norton installed and created its emergency boot disk then you can boot from that disk and see if you can run DiskDoctor on your C: drive. It should be able to fix any "file allocation errors" you may have on your hard drive.
You might have to run FDisk before attempting to format your hard drive if that does not work.
