Need help formatting hard drive

I tried to format another computers hard drive today & had some problems.

I was told by a friend I'd need to go into the BIOS & set it to boot form the cd-rom & then follow the directions for formatting & set-up. One of the options I was given in the BIOS settings was to boot from cd-rom, c:, & a: so I chose that combination & saved/exitted. I booted w/ a Win 98 cd. When the cd-rom was being read it said, "Failure" & continued to boot from c: drive as normal.

Then I created a start-up disk & tried booting from it in a: Then I was told I didn't have enough memory & was missing some files.

I need to re-format c: & install Win98.

Can anyone please tell me what is going on & perhaps give some instructions on how to format this thing?

TIA

set bios to boot: a: then c:

then insert the floppy disc and reboot the computer after saving changes in the bios

when it asks you want cd rom support and it should give you the prompt like

a: or c:

if it gives you the a prompt type c: and hit enter

then type fdisk/mbr

when it shows the prompt again type format c:/s

answer yes to losing all your info and it should format the drive

get a new boot disc if needed at bootdisk.com here

then load the extracted files(by extracting to a new floppy disk)

if you made it to this point and c: is formatted then

at the prompt type the drive letter of the drive for the win 98 disc and setup ie

d:setup hit enter and volla you on your way

i'll be around for a while if more help is needed but may be in and out

hope this helps

Thanks for the reply Wolfsraider.

Can anyone tell me, when I istall Win98 will it already have the drivers I need on the disk & thereby recognizing my hardware & installing them automatically upon set-up?

Thanks,
Dave
