Need help finding my laptop :)

I'm looking for the following..

Centrino based model preferably with 1.7 ghz and above..
512 MB RAM
60-80 GB hard drive
17" screen
Shouldnt weigh more than 8 lbs

I've been looking through all the centrino models advertised on pricewatch and I didn't find any with a 17" in screen. So if anybody can find me a laptop with the items i mentioned above I'd be very glad.

All suggestions appriciated

Sorry to say i really doubt that you will find a 17incher set up with centrino. Just for the sake of power. If i may ask y u need that large of a screen? along with centrino?

Just a thought, but you might consider one of the new IBM T42 thinkpads with the 1600x1200 15" screan. They give you a lot of screan space in a small package. I believe they tip the scales at somewhere under 6 lbs even with the larger (optional) 9 cell battery. I agree with ShellGuy - you probably wont find a 17" screan w/ centrino... or with a pentium M for that matter. If your dead set on the 17 incher Sager makes a good one. You could also opt for a 17" Powerbook, that's about the only thing I can think of with a 17" screan that weighs under 8lbs.

You could consider a 15.4 inch WUXGA (1920X1200) widescreen... it is available with dothans now...

If I'd go with a P4 solution. How much cheaper could I get? Also Is there huge difference in noise from the machine? I'm also worried about battery How much battery life do I gain by going centrino

How much cheaper for a P4? Not enough savings there to pay for treatment at the nearest burn center after you try to use that thing on your lap.

My next door neighbor has a P4 lappy that sounds like a Eureka vacuum cleaner when the fan is running on high, which happens any time he uses it for graphics or games. I have a Tecra M2 (Centrino) that gets 5-6 hours easily when being used hard. George's P4 lappy gets an hour-and-a-half tops. And that's with a 15" screen. I imagine a bigger, brighter 17" screen would limit battery life even more. Of course, you could carry a ten pound battery with you.

BTW, someone has a thread running somewher about laptop commandments. The consensus there seems to be that "Thou shalt not buy a P4 laptop."

All that is NOT true... if u get the pentium 4 mobile variant... i get over 2.5 hrs battery life with a 15.4 inch screen...

But he didn't say anything about a P4 Mobile, which wouldn't save much (if any) money anyway. He said P4. Besides, frankly, 2.5 hours isn't such a good deal compared to 5-6 hours (or more) I often see on Centrino systems.

As for me, I'm just as happy in general having to plug in. I seldom use a notebook (even my Libretto) where I can't plug in. But he did ask about battery life. If that's important to him then he needs one of the systems that's really optimized for it.

get the cheapest one with an extra battery cell you can go over 8-9+ hours
