Okay, this is going to be a lot more difficult than many may think so read carefully.

I'm looking for games with good SP modes that I can play through without losing interest 5 - 20 minutes into the game.

Here are the only games I've ever found interesting enough to play to completion to base any recomendations off of:

This list includes console games as well as the entire list is very very short.

Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil Code Veronica X
Resident Evil Zero
Parasite EVE II
All CnC games except CnC III and RA3
All CoD and MoH games to date except MW2 which I am avoiding
Red Faction
DooM 3 ( lost interest after the first time though as it was far to linear )
Vigilante 8
Vigilante 8: 2nd Offence
Battle Tanx: Global Assault
Crysis ( forgot to put this up at the start ) I do plan on getting the expansion as I did find the orignal a bit of fun

I have played all of the other games in the above listed series and for whatever reason did not care for them.

I'm currently working on FEAR ( the first ) as it seems to have the same draw to me as DooM 3 did.

I do not like RPG's at all anymore as I get too addicted to them and thus cannot let myself play them. As much fun as they are to me I just don't want to let myself play them. This includes Fallout 3 which I played for 3 days when I knew I had to stop as I got less sleep each of the 3 nights.

If you can think of any games similar to the ones I've been able to play through thn by all means please recommend them :)

Suggested games:

Defence Grid
--- This does look kinda interested and I usually see it on Steam super cheap so I'll prob get and try this one

GTA 4
--- I've always found the GTA games to lead me to random carjackings and shootings and as such I never get arround to taking a break from that stuff long enough to actually play the game :)

Dead Space
--- I did try this game last year but it made me nauxious and I don't know why so I was unable to play it though it did seem like fun.

Ranbow Six: Vegas & Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
--- I've always looked at these games but never given them a shot but after checking some reviews n such it appears that they may actually have similar gameplay to CoD 4 which I rather enjoyed

Operation Flashpoint
---

I'm not sure whether I understand your goal. It's sounds like you're looking for games that are very interesting, yet not so much that you can't put it down and go do other things.

In that vein, I recommend Defense Grid. Each mission is relatively short (5-10 minutes) but it has a lot of replay value and scaleable difficulty that will give it plenty of gameplay for you.

CNC3 was pretty good and interesting

You should also check out Dead Space!

You don't like GTA4?

you might like indie games like audiosurf, crayon physics (on name ur price sale), worms armegeddon, zuma's revenge, braid, and others. All are pretty cheap and easy to put down, but are probably worth their cost, try the demo first.

If you don't mind older graphics there's plenty of good single-player games at GoG.com, it would be easy for me to recommend the original Fallout and its sequel, or even Fallout Tactics which I myself am just starting to appreciate (bought it at GoG only last week), there's also Freespace 2 and Beyond Good & Evil (beware though, Beyond Good & Evil is known to be very difficult to run properly especially in Vista and Windows 7, I for one do have problems running it properly, but the game itself from what I've been able to play is very good so far). Also it would be quite easy to recommend The Longest Journey or even Riven: The Sequel to Myst, and why not even Jagged Alliance and its sequel.

More recently, if you like RTS games, I would suggest Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, that's the original one, I'm not referring to either of the three following expansion packs, because only Dawn of War was a "full budget release" and had a proper and lengthy single-player mode with well crafted missions and superb voice acting and a somewhat engaging story (I guess it depends on your tastes, obviously, but I liked the fantasy-mixed-with-sci-fi combo setting of the whole Warhammer 40,000 lore from the start).

Additionally there's of course the original Half-Life, or at least Half-Life 2 and the following two Episodes, or even Portal which is very short but quite refreshing. I guess I could also suggest Crysis, or Crysis Warhead as well, they're not mind blowing in terms of story, but the way the events unfold gives place to good action while it lasts, I for one praised the original Crysis when it was released, even before getting to the second level, but that was due to the revolutionary graphics and well implemented physics, I was hyped up to no end back then, but after completing it two times (on Easy and then on Hard) I realized how generic of a FPS it was overall, but the story itself is decent, I must say however that Crysis Warhead without being a sequel still is better than the original when it comes to story telling, I thought that the missions in Warhead were generally better.

Again, in the RTS genre, I do recommend Command & Conquer 3, and especially with the Kane's Wrath expansion pack, too bad because you missed the Steam's holiday sale, both were selling for very cheap, they're now back at higher prices although they're still quite cheap anyway for what they are, and that means they actually are good RTS games with a good story in my humble opinion, lots (not everyone, mind you) of C&C "purists" like to hate it simply because EA tempered with the franchise and apparently corrupted and screwed it permanently, which is complete BS in my book, C&C 3 is excellent and Kane's Wrath's single-player missions are even better, but if you do play it then of course you should start with vanilla C&C 3, then move on to KW.

As for the rest of the C&C franchise why not going with Red Alert 3? That one is much less serious than any of the Tiberium story-arc titles, it's RA for a reason, only the original Red Alert had somewhat of a serious tone to it, but there was a drastic change from RA2 and that change was kept intact in RA3, and I'm referring to the cheesy acting and exaggerated things (you'll understand when you play it), but it's still fun in its own right, I am part of a minority but I actually preferred RA3 over Yuri's Revenge (the expansion to vanilla RA2), and I thought that RA3 was just as good as RA2 (vanilla, without Yuri's Revenge thrown in), if not better in some aspects (like a much better naval units balance than RA2 had ever managed to accomplish, but that's my opinion).

There's so many choices... I could even recommend my own favorite 2006 Sleeper Hit of The Year, namely Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, developed by none other than Arkane Studios (the guys who made Arx Fatalis, another great albeit old spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld). But keep in mind that Dark Messiah has much more in common with RPG's (as well as Arx Fatalis, and especially Arx Fatalis for sure, when both are compared) than with shooters, even though both Dark Messiah and Arx Fatalis are played in a first-person-view.

I hope my suggestions helps you.

Definately try crysis:warhead, i just completed it yesterday and it was amazing fun, probably the best shooter ive played since HL2, the gameplay is just crysis again but it runs a bit smoother and you dont have to pick up ammo off the floor it does it automatically. Storylines pretty cool as well, cant wait for crysis 2 :) Also give dead space another shot, its survival horror done right for 2008, resident evil 5 was a massive letdown for me, it sucked badly which is a shame as i liked the story from the previous games 1,2 and 3. Dead space is excellent gameplay + good storyline + scary as shit! Its how survival horror should be.

On the RTS front ehh every RTS since supcom in has sucked. The new C&Cs are rubbish, C&C4 dosent even have base building in it, other new RTS games have been lousy, starcraft 2 and supcom 2 are the only ones that are gonna be any good and theyre not out yet :( I would recommend supcom but since you lose interest quickly it might not be your thing. Maybe check out company of heros, the online part of that is amazing fun, best RTS ive played since starcraft.

I second Crysis:Warhead. Very few people who liked the first disliked the second.

The original FarCry. I liked FarCry 2, but there's a lot of annoying travel between missions.

Original Prince of Persia trilogy.

Condemned: Criminal Origins is pretty fun. It's basically a FPM - First Person Melee.

If you like the gameplay of the first FEAR, pick up the expansions. FEAR 2 is a little bit different but still very fun with a great WTF ending.

Bioshock is a great atmospheric shooter. Not sure if you ever played the System Shock games - Bioshock is the unofficial sequel with modern graphics, albeit arguably inferior in some ways.

The shooter Prey can be found for cheap.

STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl is another fun, atmospheric shooter. Minimal RPG elements. Lots of mods out for it that greatly enhance gameplay.

Far Cry 2 single player, try to play it stealth, off the roads, and it will provide many hours of play time.
Maybe Frontlines Fuel of War single player.
Since you like C&C, try to find someone selling a copy of Total Annihilation.
Since you are avoiding RPG's, I guess Deus Ex is out of the question... (recently voted #1 PC game of all time)
