Just remember that opening a power box isn't for all hands you know. Lots of chaps get the "arcy-sparky syndrome" where things go downhill real fast.
Even though in case of mishap all is not lost! Nothing like plugging those unwanted electrolytics into a power supply set at 2x WVDC BACKWARDS! hehehehe Just be sure to use and extension cord and make it LONG! BANG!!!! :laugh:

As I'm sure you understand, tech-head, fets are attached to atleast one of the sinks. If the end user has the cover off, unit powered-up, tongue on sink & feet in salt water, eyes will pop-out
The fan is on the cover, so there is no need to power-up. Just change out the fan for silence. There is a tutorial at SPCR or several can be found via Google. Fan noise is the only demerit for the 0560G. It's 75.8% efficient.
I have brushed a sink while adjusting pots with a PSU open & loaded. 160~200VDC will get ones attention

Speaking of silence I remember back in 1994 I was using a Dell 486 desktop that developed a noisy fan and the quick fix was to jam a pencil in the ps grille. I forgot about it and it ran that way for six months before it was removed. :Q

Oh and you would be surprised at what can happen when the folks that shouldn't be opening covers - do!
Sometimes intrusion by unexpected foreign objects causes strange things to happen. Like the case of the TV set that mysteriously blows out when moved. Upon removing the cover, there was over twelve dollars in change inside! The culprit, kids of course. When confronted, the little guy said "Daddy I thought it was a big bank with all the little coin slots!" :laugh:
Funny how everyone will go to all this trouble to silence the fan yet the hard disk or gpu cooler is still humming away. Oh I forgot they rubber band those hard drives (that is very bad to do but that is for another discussion!
) and buy those artic things to put on their GPU - hey as a X1900XTX user I can understand the thing is louder than a 1983 B&D Dust Buster with NOS! :shocked:It's ok outside of doing 3D but still it would be nice to quiet down. This "hobby" is out of control, really it is.

It's ok outside of doing 3D but still it would be nice to quiet down. This "hobby" is out of control, really it is.
Hehe! I've replaced one PSU fan before, on my old p200 server a couple years ago. Added a nice quiet 92mm fan iirc. Just have to be careful is all
As far as quieting down the rest of the system -Case fans = (2) 120mm SilenX fans @ 14dBA
CPU HSF = Thermaltake Big Typhoon with one of the above fans
PSU = (2) 80mm Silenx fans @ 14dBA
GPU = Zalman vf900 aftermarket HSF
Hard drive = Raptor in SilenX hard drive enclosure (rated for up to 15K-rpm drives)
The 120mm fans push out a respectable 64 CFM even at 14dB, so I should be pretty happy with those. I don't have kids (yet), so I'm all set on that front
For a fanned PSU, the most silent you can go is probably Seasonic.

A 21dBA Nexus fan is quieter than a "14 dBA" SilenX fan simply because SilenX lies and Nexus does not. Stay away from Thermaltake if you care about silence at all. They just rate everything at 21 dBA no matter how loud it is.

registered with many nicks promoting his product in silence oriented forums. SPCR caught
him red handed. All his nicks & IP were banned over there. This can be found documented
in the SPCR Forums. We have had a few on this board that were identified as having ties
to AEG(Google) for promoting products on boards. Sometimes one has to read between
the lines

Silence is best left to SPCR. I am fond of high quality ball bearing fans. Akasa Ambers,
Sanyo Denki, Delta Triple Blade are high on my short list. The DTB in low & medium
speed will reliably start/run at 3.5V in utter silence when hooked-up to a Sunbeam Rheobus
fan controller. I prefer fans with a tach/sensor feed wire=true three wire fan. Most of the above
have this option.
The new high-end Scythe fans have my interest, they use ceramic bushings but co$t.
When the price drops, I might give'em a try.
The NeXus sound atenuating mat rates over the Acusti mat. The stuff is heavy and is to be
considered the last attempt at silence, after all else is dealt with. I'm not a silence freak.
A quiet rig with cool ambients is fine with me but when ambient temps hit 80+F, fans get
ramped up

Yeah I'm fine with just "quiet". Definately not going for silent on this rig. I just don't want a vacuum cleaner next to my desk
Browsing now, thanks for the link!I have read no reviews of this unit but do know it has an internal 80mm fan for full load
operation. It will ramp-up but at 50% load it is quiet.
If I had to have a silent PSU for a low power HTPC a Silverstone 300W passive would be
investigated. It is OEMed by Etasis, one of the best SMPS builders. The same 300W unit can
be found here. http://www.etasis.com.tw/ Even a well designed/built passive demands active
case air flow.
