Need help finding a cellphone that will work in Europe (France in particular)

As the title says, I need a cellphone that I can take with me during my semester abroad.

The Verizon guy in the mall by my house said they only have a few compatible phones, but they are mucho $$. I only need it for one semester, so is there a way I can buy a phone on eBay, unlock it, and get a new SIM card (if this is what you have to do)?

I can get one there, but you have to pay like $150 for the phone my friend said, so I was wondering if I could save some $$ buy getting a compatible (I think it has to be GSM compatible) phone stateside.

Thanks in advance.

One of the, cheap on ebay, older GSM phones should do just fine. This this or this aren't going to win you huge points for style, or allow you to wow the techies; but you can get fairly cheap unlocked GSM handsets if you don't mind an older style, and they ought to work nicely with a basic prepaid SIM purchased on arrival, which will give you decent airtime rates.

For calling friends, family, lovers, pets, houseplants and so forth, at home, you will probably have better luck with VOIP, for lower airtime rates(skype should be easy to get started with); but a prepaid SIM will do the trick for local calling and occasional on-the-go international use.

Thanks for all the suggstions.

Yea, this is mainly going to be used for keeping in contact with people over there....for calling the States I plan on using VOIP.

I got both my Tmobile phones for free when I signed up and both work in Europe. I used a Samsung x475 and got 6 full bars just about everywhere I went in Europe.

go to an INdian STORE! (indian area) / chinese area or www.cellphoneshop.net and get a GSM phone.

When we travel to india, we buy a 50$ basic GSM phone to work in india. Ofcourse now i have a Motorola V505 quad band, so it will work everywhere. but basically you need 900/1800/1900 bands to work with.

Last thing, does it have to be TriBand, or does GSM compatible cut it?

Tri or Quad band. GSM compatible will usually just be dual band for this country.
