Need help fast.

My moms harddrive needs to be reformated. It is far beyond repair. The only problem is she has some files on her computer that she needs and she had a password. I put her HD as a slave in my pc. When I try and get into her folder it says access denied. How can I get pass this?

you need to take ownership of the files, right click on folder, goto security, advanced, owners and pick yourself.. reset the permissions and it should be urs

I dont see this. I right click on the folder, and I go to sharing and security. I dont see any advance, or anything about owners.

1) Go to Control Panel
2) Click 'Appearances and Themes', then click 'Folder Options'
3) In the 'View' tab, under 'Advanced Settings', uncheck 'Use simple file sharing'

I think to do this you need to have XP pro. The home version doesn't have the advanced security settings...I might be wrong here.

If you have the settings then previous post is right on. Once you get rid of simple file sharing you need to click on the advanced security setting in the security tab that should be in your file/folder properties pages.

If you have XP Home, you have to boot to safe mode, then log in as Administrator. You'll then be able to do what you can do in XP Pro normally. You'll still have to uncheck "Use simple file sharing", though.
