Using some old stuff to put together a system for an underprivileged family and I have several older systems to choose from but I need some advice. Which would be faster/better......a system built around an AMD Athlon 850 or a PIII 800EB? I have complete systems using both and would like to know which one to get ready.

Athlon will probably be faster. The Athlon usually beat the PIII at equal clock speeds.

Thanks.....I wish I had time for some testing but time is running short.

Time for some sleep.....if anyone has more advice I would appreciate it and will check first thing in the morning.

Thanks all......Merry Christmas!

The Slot athlon is about equal clock for clock to a pIV, the socket athlon is around 10% faster. If you don't need either system, and you want to give them the better of the two, give them the athlon.

Thanks, I have so many extra systems laying around I would like to give them the best of what I have that I haven't planned to use for something.

I do this all year long, not just for the holidays. I figure it's better to give a box to some kid or single mother or such, than to have it go into the recycle bin. Good for you!

Actually I do it all year long too but this is a special case. This young lady has nothing and has never received anything new in her life so I made sure along with her once again hand me down (the computer) she is getting a brand new Canon color printer.

Definitely hats off to you!!!

My company takes all our older PCs and does the same thing....We just gave away 3 systems ranging from p3 450 to p3 800....MOst went to underprivileged ppl who had children and could use them to help in school work....

We try to do this with 3-4 systems each year....

If I had old parts I wasn't using that would be of use to someone I'd probably do the same thing... although when I upgrade, I usually sell off the old parts to pay for the new parts, so there's not many spare parts laying around except some CD-ROM drives, empty cases, an old 486 CPU & motherboard, and old 386SX, 5.25 inch floppy drive, SB16 PCI.

I have all these parts laying around from upgrading friends' computers. I do if as a favor to my close friends and they give me the old parts. I test and shelve everything until I have enough stuff to build a complete system and when I find someone genuinely in need I put one together and send it to them. Between all my friends and family I acquire quite a bit of older stuff and I don't sell it off because in my opinion it is not worth enough to be worth my time, I got it for free for doing something I would do anyway, and I like helping people out when I can because no amount of money can equal that kind of reward.
