need help - fan connected but software shows no RPM

Hi,
My mobo is the ASUS A7V and my fan is the ThermalTake Volcano II.
It is all connected and installed ok.
the fan works but the asus probe shows 0 rpm.
when I connect my other fan it works and shows the rpm so I know its not the mobo.
Is this fan supposed to show the rpm?

P.S. - the bios also shows 0 rpm for this fan but the right number for the other fan.

Does the fan that "doesn't show rpms" have a three wire connection? It should have three wires; a red, black and YELLOW wire. The yellow is the speed sensor connection.
