Need help enabling Ultra ATA/66 on Abit KT7A mobo

Ok...I've tried to find an answer in a FAQ, but no go. So here I am again requesting the wisdom of Anandtechers. As always, here is my setup:

Abit KT7A
Duron 750 (7.5 @ 100Mhz)
Generic M-tech 192MB (128 & 64) PC133 RAM
ATI Rage II+ PCI vid card
Western Digital Caviar 20.5GB 7200rpm Ultra ATA/66 IDE HD (Primary Master)
Acer 56x CD-ROM (Secondary Master)
HP 9150i CD-writer (Secondary Slave)
Teac 3.5" floppy
Voodoo2 1000 PCI card
Mach2 56k PCI modem
*No sound card*
OS: Win98SE

Right now, I have my HD hooked up to the IDE1 connector using an Ultra ATA/66 cable with the blue end connected to the HD, and the black end connected to the mobo. I know this is *wrong*, but this is the only way I can get the HD to be detected & the system to run. When I try to install the HD with the blue end on the mobo and the black end to the HD like I'm supposed to, the CMOS does not detect the HD whatsoever.

RIght now, when the system loads, it shows Ultra ATA/33 on the HD, and there's a message saying 80 connector cable not present (or something like that).

Am I doing something wrong? How can I get Ultra ATA/66 enabled with the setup I've got? Any ideas or suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks in advance!

There are 3 connectors on 80-pin IDE cables. Must sure you connect one end to the mobo and the other end to your HD leaving the middle one alone.

h0vic,

I was hooking it up as you suggested, with the blue end (at one end of the cable) to the mobo, and the black end (at the other end of the cable) to the HD, leaving the gray one in the middle alone. That's the case where it wasn't detecting the HD.

I also have the jumper on the HD set to master. Does it need to be set to "single" (which is no jumper present) or "cable select" by chance?

I also tried hooking the HD up to the IDE2 connector. In that case, it detected the HD, but wouldn't boot off of it.

When you connect the cable to your mobo and HD the correct way, does the system post at all or do you error messages and it beeps at you?

Ok...I got it to work. Installed the cables the "correct" way, set the HD to single mode (no jumper), and it detected & booted up fine. Ran my ATA Management disk that came with the HD and set the HD for ATA/66. Booted up just fine. 🙂 Thanks for the suggestions!
