NEED HELP - Did I fry my MOBO ?

I need assistance in figuring out which component in my PC recently broke.

I built my own PC. It has always run very well, BUT once in a while static electricity would build up on me, and either when i touched it with my hand or a thunb drive, I would shock it and it would turn off. Obviously a bad thing, but I dodnt know what I could do to prevent it.

Two nights ago, I was matching a movie (from my HDD, not a DVD) and the movie froze. This had never happened before, but I didnt think it was a big deal. I went to restart the computer and as I touched it, BAM!, another elctric shock turned it off. (This had already happened twice that day, which is much more than usual. Its usually like once at week maybe)

Since then, when I try to turn my PC back on, all the fans turn on, everything SOUNDS like it is booting up, the little red light on the MOBO is on, but it doesnt even make it to the BIOS. I tried reseting the CMOS, but that did not help.

I am guessing it is a fried MOBO.
Is there a chance it could be something else though? Like the HDD or video card maybe?

Any help, in fixing the issue, or at least narrowing down what new part I need to buy, would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

It sounds more like there is a short/ground. Did you use the stand offs when you installed the MB in the case? Check the connector for the power button on the case. Sometimes the physical switch on the case is the culprit.

Are the "Standoffs" the spacers between the case and the motherboard?
If so, than yes, I used those.

As far as the power button, I dont think its that, because when I hit the power button, it does in fact start the computer, in terms of the fans and everything, but never reaches BIOS. Also, my MOBO has a Power & Reset button right on it, and when I try to use those, the same thing happens.

Is the computer properly grounded? I have a hard time imagining a static charge from you to the case could cause this unless there is a short momentary or otherwise between the case and MB. In any case check all your connections, clean out box with a can of air and, if still no joy, try with MB out of case.

There is a Computer Help and a Motherboard forum, might get more helpfull responses there. Some things that just come to mind would be removing all but 1 stick of ram. Or perhaps your bios chip is fried, or you need a new battery ?

I would second the idea of cleaning everything and even taking the mobo out of the case and laying it on some cardboard just so you eliminate as many variables as possible.

I will try that.

I am being told to take everything out and try to boot to BIOS with just one stick of RAM installed.

Any other ideas?

Also, I didnt realize this static build up was such an anomaly.

I also get identical shocks when I touch my Receiver, which outputs my computer's sound and is plugged into the same sugre protector & outlet.

It sounds like that outlet is not properly grounded.
