I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP Pro on a customers laptop. Naturally he doesn't have the original CDs.

I have CDs for Corporate, retail, and OEM here.. but the key on his laptop won't work with any of them.

The sticker says 'Windows XP Professional 1-2CPU' .. Can anyone tell me exactly what I need to give this stupid thing so it'll take a fully legal CD key? Other than telling the guy to pay dell for CDs and wait a few weeks to get them..

Thanks

First, if the Dell came with the OS installed it would be the OEM Version
Second, the key on the bottom will never work with a Dell as when it is
preinstalled, it uses a Volume License Key which is embedded in the
setup file (I forget the exact name of the file, but it tells the computer
to load certain things, like the computer name, key, checks if its an
upgrade or not .. etc

Third, if the computer still runs, then use AIDA32 or Belarc Advisor
or Everest Home Edition .... most can be found at MajorGeeks.com
and other sites ... all are Free .... run them .... it will give you the
Software Product Key & the License or Reg Codes .... well worth
a few minutes to run them

The Key on the Dell won't work with ANY version of XP. Microsoft quit accepting Dell (and other large OEM) Keys for online Activation two years ago. If you use an original Dell XP Install CD, no Activation is required. Ever. So there's no need to ever use the Key.

You can usually use a generic OEM version of XP to install XP and then call Microsoft, tell them what the problem is, and get a telephone Activation.

The customer should call Dell and get the Dell CD. Dell usually provides the entire set of CDs for free if you ask nicely. It takes a couple of days to get them.

I recently upgraded my mother in law's home office dell pc with a new hard drive and more ram and she didnt have the dell cds. So I just used an OEM xp pro cd and the key that was on the case sticker. It wouldnt activate online so I just called MS and explained the situation and they gave me the activation code. Don't worry if online activation doesnt work.

Somewhere out in the Outlands there is a huge pile of socks that are lost in the laundry. And right next to that is an even bigger pile of OEM CDs and DVDs.

Things that make you go Hmmmmmm!

I sometimes use socks as cd protectors... they work ok until the dog gets a hold of the socks...
