wow, great site. Just built a new computer with an 8800 gts. I have an 8 year old 17inch crt monitor. Will these Lcds below be much better than what I have now? The monitor is generic.

I like to game sometimes, I do lots of programming and document work, and macromedia work(at the monment).

So are true 8bit lcds better?

Of the 2 below, How much better is the nec to the LG? I am trying to justify the 600 dollar price tag.

I am really concerned about the return policy of an online store. I was thinking of going with newegg, but the price is much higher than amazon or buy.com. Anyone have experince with either or know of a better company? The stores where I live dont carry the nec.

I am thinking of this one:
20.1"w: NEC MultiSync 20WMGX2, 1680x1050 (16:10)
Panel: AS-IPS (LPL LM201WE2); true 8-bit, 16.7M colors

Response time: <10 ms. (measured)

Specifications: NEC MultiSync 20WMGX2

HDCP compliant: Yes

More info: prad.de

Notes: Black bezel is 20WMGX2-BK. OptiClear contrast coating (increases contrast but also worsens glare). Exceptional colors with dynamic contrast, great viewing angles, extremely good response time (good as fastest TNs) according to hardware.fr. Tons of inputs, TV tuner, and HDCP. Without a doubt, worth the money. Great warranty/service. Maximum speed+maximum colors! European version (same panel) is LCD20WGX2, but lacks HDCP/other multimedia features.

Price: ~$615 USD ($550-565 AR)

or

22"w: LG Flatron L226WT, 1680x1050 (16:10)
Panel: TN (LPL LM220WE1); 6-bit+Hi-FRC, 16.7M colors

Response time: 5 ms. g2g (rated)

Specifications: LG L226WT

HDCP compliant: Yes

More info: prad.de

Notes: Best 22" LCD.

Price: ~$380 USD

yeah, I did. I was confused about how much better would the nec be compared to the lg. And if these two lcds would be better than my old crt.

Get the NEC if price is of no concern. While I'd admit that 6-bit panels are getting better and better, I would still prefer an 8-bit panel.
If you're on a budget, then the LG is a fine choice as well.

I am not worried about price. I like the nec, seems to offer more. I am just wondering, how much better. If its like 5% better than Id go with the LG. Have to have a good excuse for the woman--lol or she will go out and buy purses or something.

NEC.

If money is no concern then stay as far away from TN panels as you can.

Any recomendations on where to buy? I was thinking about buy and amazon. I really thinking about newegg, but there is no returns allowed--unless I misunderstood. I would like to be able to return it hassle free--Dont want to be stuck with a junker.

Here is the specs of the crt I have now.

17"
dot type .27mm pitch black
.
.
.
.

sweep freq
H- 30 -70Khz
V- 50-150Hz

Video Bandwith
110Mhz

Power:
Ac100-240v, 50/60Hz

resolution
1280 X 1024

Do you think these current Lcds will be better?

You wont be disappointed with either LCD going from your current CRT.

I dont really know where you should get the LCD, I have always gotten mine from either Dell or a B&M store.

IIRC Buy.com has a pretty good return policy with these things, although their overall support is not supposed to be very good.

Circuit City has this Nec for $10 more than Newegg. Easy to return if there's a problem.

on newegg I can get it for 586, circuitcity 615, buy.com for 519, and amazon 495 with a credit card. Newegg said i would have to pay shipping and a restock fee.

o yeah, there are no different versions of the nec are there? Kind of like the samsungs with the A panel.

Nope no different panels, just two different color versions

Europe has a version without HDCP and less inputs

I got mine 550CDN from BB online ... final price after shipping and taxes = $641CDN

It looks like many of the online vendors have the NEC on clearance. I found a few vendors that state they only have a few models left.

Is NEC discontinuing the 20WMGX2?

I keep hearing that a 23" (I think) version of the NEC is due out this Spring sometime. Expect it to cost over $1000 though.

I puchased the 20.1" and love it. It came with one stuck pixel, which bugged me to no end for an entire 10 minutes. Then I got over it and I never ever notice it. Was worth not dealing with return shipping, etc. I mean think about it. The old grill-aperature CRTs came with those two horizontal lines that ran across the ENTIRE length of your screen. Well, those bugged you too at first I'm sure. But then you just stopped noticing them. Well a single stuck pixel is like 1/1680 of one of those lines. So it's completely insignificant.

hmmm, good point. I think of a dead pixel as, A rock from a truck cracks your winshield right in your main sight. Actually, thats my truck now. It annoys the heck out of me. No matter what your always gonna be distracted by it.

At school, the LCDs have tons of dead pixels(hp and gateway) and just one dead pixel is sooo annoying their really bright. Thats kinda why I am worried. Unless this monitors pixels are so small it wont matter.

actually, stairing at my CRT kills my eyes.
