Hi Guys-

I recently upgraded my dual Pentium II Xeon 400Mhz w/1MB L2 Cache to AMD Athlon XP 2000+. Performace wise it doesn't increase much maybe 20%. Any way I have a problem after upgrading the system, cooling.

Here is my configuration: (no overclock)

Antec SX1030 w/300 Watts...2 exhaust fans, 2 intake fans, 1 power supply fan
Gigabyte GA-7VRXP
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Retail
Samsung DDR333 512MB
ALL-IN-WONDER 128 Pro 32MB
Matrox RT2500
Adaptec SCSI 29160N
Seagate 18.6GB SCSI160 10K RPM
Maxtor 80GB ATA133 7.2K RPM
Toshiba DVD-ROM

Temperature reading using HSF came with the CPU: CPU = 58C; Case=44C
Then replace HSF with Antec Reference CPU Cooling: CPU=48C; Case=37C
But the Antec Reference CPU Cooling noise is like jet engine 7.2K rpm...too loud.

I want to cool this baby down to at least CPU =< 40C. and drop down the noise too.
please help. Thanks.

Sounds to me that you're not gettin enough air moving in, I'm lost here myself with that ventilation you should be alright. You have a 10 degree difference with case and cpu which don't seem half bad, but i thought the case should be room temperature. That's where I get lost with your cooling. Also what type of heatsink are you using, you mentioned changing the hs fan but not the heatsink. The heatsink itself should be changed to get better cooling with the cpu. If anyone else has an opinion I'd love to hear it.

I replace the HS and the HSF that came with the CPU with Antec reference cpu cooling(HS + HSF). here is the link Antec

I also notice that my power supply seems very warm, all warm air comes out. While the 2 rear exhaust fans exhaust out cool air. Maybe my power supply is overloaded (300 watts)?

I actually find it strange that a change of HSF actually dropped your case temp by 7 degrees. You certainly have alot of stuff in that case. I would think that you should be able to get the case temp down to about 28C without much problem. A few questions for you:
1. What is the room temperature?
2. What kind of fans are you using (brand, RPM, CFM)?
3. Doesn't that 10K disk already make more noise than the fans?
4. If you have an RPM monitoring wire for the PS fan what is it spinning at?

Actually I changed the HS and the HSF. I found it strange too but as long as temperature drop I'll be happy.
It's not very acceptable because summer is coming soon so I need my cpu/case to cool lower.

1. My room temperature I guess about 72-75F.
2. I use 2 exhaust fans and 1 intake from Antec (about 4.5K rpm each). 1 Intake from Enermax (4.5K rpm).
I'm not sure about the CFM specs but the fans are 80mm.
3. Actually my 10K rpm is very quiet. I hear it only when the system boots up. The fans has more noise.
4. My power supply doesn't have the monitoring wire. But it does force out alot of warm air. Although the
2 exhaust fans force out cool air.

Today I change my HS again. I bought Alpha PAL8045 w/80mm fan @ 2K rpm. With this HS/F my CPU temp drop to 47C and my case drop to 33C on normal load. My previous HS/F was with 60mm @ 7.2-8K rpm (sound like jet engine). The alpha does a better perfomance with lower spindle and drop noise tremendously.
