My Athlon 1.4Ghz 266bus runs way too hot it runs at 59-61c IDLE! This is way too hot that I do know so I'm thinking of getting a new case this one: http://www.enermax.com.tw/products/fs-710.htm do you think that this one would be worth $115 shipped and a new heatsink the Themaltake Volcano 7 fro $20 shipped or do I just need a new heatsink? My current case is not as large of a tower and does not have as many fans, so what do I do, I'm open to any and all suggestions, and will this provide enough airflow to get my temperature down quite a bit, plus what kind of temperatrues do you guys think that I will get after a new case and heatsink?

Hmm... my Athlon XP was overheating at 51 C and when I got my AX-7 with a 37 cfm fan, it lowered it to 38 C, then I added a 92mm case fan, and that lowered my temps to 32 C. Maybe you should try some better cooling, oh and I stuck with my Enlight 7237 for this.

In order to help we need more info. What is your current motherboard, and heatsink/fan? What are your room and case temps? How many intake/exhaust fans?

51C isnt overheating by any means. The chips can take much more than that. I don't like mine to run much higher than that but it is fine at that temp. Not everyone gets chips to run at 25C at idle.

AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz w/266 Bus (CPU Runs at around 60C while Idle)
Running ASUS A7M266 Motherboard w/BIOS v1005
512mb PC2100 DDR RAM
GeForce 2 GTS 32mb DDR
2x18.2gb Ultra-SCSI 160 w/Adaptec 29170-N controller card(or something)
120gb 7200rpm Western Digital Hard Drive
Sony 16x DVD-ROM

You missed the most important info. Your current room temperature and case temps. what heatsink/fan are you running now. What thermal interface did you use if any?

Approximate room temperature is 70-73F my heatsink is a retail box, but I've heard from a few people that AMD retail box heatsinks sucks ass, and thermal paste I just used some Generic white stuff, but recently bought Arctic Silver 3

Generally the asus temps are a little higher than most other boards. I think a new heatsink would work wonders for you. Do you have any case fans at all?

I have fan in the front pushing it though, and a fan in the rear taking it out, also the fan on my mobo I think is starting to die.

Everything sounds fine except for the heatsink. What have you thought about for a new heatsink? I recomend the Thermalright AX-7.

Please provide a link for this newheat sink, and where I can get it for the best cost shipped, if that does it for me then I'll just order that and wait on the case 🙂

Which fan out of the enermax adjustable ones do you recommend with the AX-7 heatsink, the 8cm, the 9cm, or the 12cm?

I would just go with a Volcano 7 and some arctic silver themal paste, together they cost about $24. If you are using just a regular stock heatsink you could easily see a drop in temp about 10 degrees. I work for CaseCooler.com and the number one problem we see in overheating is room temp which has been mentioned in this disscussion and airflow inside your case. Remember you can have all the fans in the world but if they aren't moving cold air into your case and hot air out, you won't run as cool you want. I would be concerned about 51, its true the processor its rated to support around 65 degrees, but 51 is a bit to warm.
