We all know ASF sucks. Anyway, I'm trying to convert the Metal Gear Solid 2 trailer to an mpeg file, except it keep freezing. I've determined that it is because of the audio track, not the video track. Anyway, so now I'm trying to rip the audio track seperatly, but I can't find any program except tmpgenc that'll do this for me, except that program keep freezing at about 2% when I try to do anything with the audio track.

Any ideas how I can convert this file, or rip the audio track off the asf and reencode using the two seperate tracks?

Trailer is avaliable here

I'm using the high quiality one.

Hey Edge,

Looks like you're gonna need VirtualDub 1.2. I've tried doing this with the newest version, but supposedly MS complained so only the old VirtualDub has the ability to convert from ASF.

This thread should help.

Good luck :)

Helped a little bit. Now I get an error saying 'Couldn't locate decompressor for format WMV2'

Any ideas?

Tried TMPGEnc without using the audio track?

Convert just the video using it, then use something like total recorder to capture the audio (real time).

Then merge them into a mpeg in TMPGEnc.

That should work. I've fought my way throuh my share of crap ASFs in my time (they're always corupted someway or another it seems)

wouldn't rerecording it mess up the quality horribly, and also get rid of the stero sound?

woah, phat, you can just open it up in winamp and use winamp's diskwriter feature to turn the audiotrack into a wav file

You need one of the earlier version of VirtualDub to convert from .asf (acronym for "a sucky format"). Microsoft put the screws to the program author and made him remove .asf support in the later versions, but the earlier ones can do it, are freeware and are readily available. You need version 1.3c or earlier. Anything 1.3d and later had the .asf capability removed. Try asking nicely in the alt.binaries.multimedia.utilities newsgroup on usenet

Converting an ASF to a MPG isn't going to make it look any better. It's just like an MP3 coverted to an audio CD doesn't sound the same as the original.

yea, i know, but you can't seek in asf files. Plus asf files tend to be blury sometimes, so I can run some filters and tone down the bluryness. Basically, asf is a crappy format for everything.

Actually you can seek in ASF files..if you can't..it means you don't have the whole file or it got corrupted...which it seems 50% of ASF files are.
