Ok, here's the deal, I'm trying to make a mirror image of my C: harddrive (which has WindowsXP installed on it) to another drive and I keep running into the same problem each time. The drive appears to copy over OK, but when I hook the new drive up to the primary ide connector and boot the machine, WinXP loads to the point of the welcome screen and then hangs. I never see the log-in icons for the different users. I've tried Symantec's Ghost2002 & PowerQuest's DriveImage 2002 and each give the same result. Someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks,

dave

Did you install Ghost2002 on the C: drive (master - primary IDE). You'll also have to create a boot disk w/ a 3/14" floppy during the installation. Reboot the system and it run under DOS. Follow the instructions to copy the drive.

I installed my "backup drive" as the slave - primary IDE. Was able to copy all files (Windows XP, NTFS file system) from a 6.4 GB to a 30 GB. I make copies of my C: drive just in case it fails.

I think there's a difference between a mirror image and a ghost image which, for example, you can compress. I think you need something like drive copy or some other drive duplicating software to transfer one drive to another.

If anyone is curious, I successfully cloned my primary drive by deleting all partitions on the new drive and leaving the space unallocated. I then let DriveImage2002 partition the unallocated space and copy the drive. Seems to have worked OK.
