Need help chosing a sports car to consider buying!

Well, I'm starting to plan ahead to buying a new car when I get my CCIE, and need help finding some cars to choose from. Here's some info to start with:

Price: $20k - $40k (And the M3 with paddle shifters and 19" wheels for ~51k)

Cars I've considered: IS300 (Like the body), Camaro, M3(If I win the lottery), and g35(after reading Road & Track thread comparing sedans)

Transmission: Manual, Of coarse!!!

Prefer sedan, but it at least needs a usable back seat. (no Mustang back seat)

I'm looking for other cars in this price range that meet the above criteria, and have great acceleration. I also want something that will not fall apart, since I drive VERY aggressively. The M3 is a loooooong shot, so I need to try to target the $30k range if possible.

Thanks for any input!

how about the audi A4 quattro, im not really even sure how much one costs, or exactly what you are looking for in terms of performance, but i really like them...good luck on your choice!!!

I've thought about it, but my friend ahd a 01 Mustang, and the back seat SUCKS. It the 03 you refer to the one with good HP? If it's in the price range, I may add it to the list. What is a Ram Air Transam?

Do not get the boring WS6 "ram air" TA, get a Firehawk if you really want a modded TA (35K). You better act fast because this is the last year of the F-body. No more Camaro or Firebirds after 2002.

The 03' Cobra will have 390 ponies and is also 35K.

Looks like the Highest end one is $35k base, and puts out 220HP. That seems pretty low, doesn't it?

I don't know much about cars. I just don't like being beat off the line at red lights, and like being able go 65-95 quickly for highway passing.

Yeah, problem is I probably won't be ready to buy until the end of the year, so Camaro is probably out(unless I find a killer deal). I also have to weigh in it's back seat, or lack thereof. The Mustang may not be to bad with 390. My friend's GT leaves me yearning for more, and that may offer it.

Why not an S4?

You've got a lot of money to play with. 3 cars I would consider if you didn't need a back seat:

Honda S200
Porsche Boxster
Chevrolet Corvette

If you want exciting:
1971 Porsche 914 with 3.6L 993 motor

If you want modern, exciting and comfortable:
BMW 330Ci.

Who makes the S4? Unfortunately, I do really want a back seat, so the others you list are out. 330ci is tempting too. I hadn't seen it, but it looks like it starts at $35k, which is better than the M3. May need to be my fallback when I can't fund the M3. 😉

how about a infinity g35 with the skyyline engine, and throw in some basic bolt ons (maybe go as far as a huge a$$ turbo conversion ie:to4r) and youll have a FAST high performance vehicle!

Sorry, but I didn't understand most of that. Since I know nothing about cars, I really need something "off the shelf" with full warranty and everything. Now what is this skyline I keep hearing people mention?

S4 is the sport version of the Audi A4.

I know that if I had $30k, I'd get nothing other than a Pontiac Trans Am or Formula Firebird. Ram Air if I could afford it. (Haven't looked at prices in a long time.) As somebody else suggested, the Firehawk is the most extreme Trans Am around. If it was a LOT cheaper, I would consider the SS Camaro, but I think that they're a lot uglier than the Trans Am/Firebird.

edit: Skyline is Nissan's 'extreme' performance car that's sold only in Japan. It's supposedly coming here soon (i.e. next couple of years).

Get anything but the 6sp G35 coupe. 'Cause I'm going to get that and will have to bolt on some parts to make it faster than yours! 😀

Gah, buy a 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo for $8K or so and keep the rest of your money for when you need it. That thing will haul ass. If you need it to go faster, mod it a little bit (manual boost controller). I've never driven in anything that handles anywhere near as well as an MR2. Those things beat everything in handling 🙂

To beat people off the line, you need either a rwd or awd car. 65-95 on the freeway, rwd will be better because you have less losses, but an awd sports car can do as well with a little more money. Don't get the Lexus, it's not *all* that fast... I'll just toss the WRX sedan out there, but I'm guessing you'll end up with reliability issues with it. If I were in your position I'd get either a Camaro SS or the BMW 330ci. The Camaro will be much faster. Nothing against the g35, but it doesn't come in a manual yet. Also nothing against the Lancer Evo, it's just not here yet.

don't get the boxter, it's such a worthless POS

i hate american cars with a passion

it just feels so big and bulky

whereas when you're driving a japanese or german car it's more graceful and stuff (direct observation after driving alot of both)

i say the is300, any audi (they're quite nice, i was surprised), m3 is a great car

i'm not too fond of infiniti styling

you can get a 5series bimmer 😉

and why the heck would you want a freakin 92 mr2?

you gotta look good while driving =P

aww dayam... i just looked at the website, and i read 5 speed manual something something, and then i read it and it was like it's the tiptronic thingy... but it's still a skyline engine... and for most purposes... from what i've read on some of the auto forums, auto vs. stick is not much of a diff in performance... it's just the feel... but think, you can drink coffee safely while driving!

skylines are nissan cars available in japan that have the sr40dt (or something like that... it has numbers and letters... i dont' remember... it's late and i'm cramming for a math final) engine and it's a friggin' crazy inline 6 engine... detuned to 260hp... with a few bolt ons, can easily hit 700hp at the wheels... it's awd too... crazy car!!! actually, there's a skyline for sale in the us... a few of them actually... there's one here

First off, 1991, not 1992.

Second off, you lose.

That's the one that I've driven around in, that EXACT car (I've known the owner for a long time).

If white isn't your thing, then there's also blue and a bunch of other colors. I know it's not a big $30K car, but it's damn nice and is GREAT for the price. Honestly, I'd recommend a 2001 or 2002 Z06 over the MR2 (duhhhhh), but since a Z06 is about $60K, that's out of this guy's price range. Anyway, I'm going to bed, so I can't sit here and debate any longer.

Audi S4 sport sedan
250hp Twin Turbo V6
6 speed manual
AWD with 258lb/ft starting at just 1850 RPMs meaning lots of fun stoplight to stoplight encounters
Probably run you a little under $40k brand new, or get a used one alot cheaper since the body style is being phased out for the new A4 style next year.

hey that's nice you got a fast car and all, but it's still a big POS

sometimes speed isn't the only important thing 😉

sorry, the 0-blowjob time on any of the above mentioned cars blows the mr2 out of the water =P

if you're gonna tell him about older cars, what about finding a good rotary mechanic and getting a 93-95 rx-7? looks friggin' awesome, and you're talking twin turbo 1.3 liter rotary engine that puts out 255 hp stock to the rear wheels of a 2800 pound car...? fast, excellent looking, and with bolt-ons, you'd have one DAMN fast car... (btw, that's the car i'ma get in about a year or 2 when i can afford it... 😀)

Yeah, I know that. If speed was the only important thing, we'd all be driving POS Vipers. The MR2 handles better than anything in its class, goes nice and fast, and still manages to keep the price low. I'm not necessarily recommending an MR2 to this guy, since he's looking for something more expensive, I'm just letting him know that it's an option and that it could potentially save him money while still getting him a nice car.

Edit: My recommendation for this guy's price range would be a 98 or so Vette. Preferably a Z06, but that starts to get expensive.
