If you are looking at DVD-ROM drives, it's pretty much a split between Toshiba and Pioneer. People like them both, they both are high quality either way you go. The Pioneer slot-loading is pretty slick, but it's not the quietest drive when throwing a cd into it, it's fine for playing dvd's, which is what I pretty much only use it for, so the noise isn't a problem for me. The Pioneer tray-loading doesn't have this noise issue; I have the 16x slot, my friend has the 16x tray, and the tray is about as noisy as an average cd-rom drive, which isn't that noisy.

Ok cool, thanks everyone.

I'll look into either a good CD-rom of the Toshiba/Poineer DVD-roms.
Hearing rumors of a box set of Back To The Future DVD's got me thinkin' bout gettin a dvd player :)

Go here , click on the review tab up top, then click the year 2000, and look at May, there is a pretty comprehensive review on IDE CD-ROM's that's well worth reading. I am a big fan of Toshiba drives, and would highly recommend one, the only problem being the low DAE scores as mentioned above. Read the reviews and see which best fits your needs.

I've tried a lot of CD-ROM's in the past few months, ranging from Pine and BTC to Shuttle and Kenwood's 72X. I'm very pleased with the Acer 50X that I'm currently using.

I own a Asus s-500/a and it works like a charm........I wouldn't recommend it though coz. it fails to read subchannel data which is one of the most important factor when it comes to cloning a cd.......securom, protectCD and a whole lot of other protections has associated with the subchannel data thingy.......I've heard that the toshibas are the best

Just my opinion

Get an Asus. Its the best performer, bar the Kenwood 72X, but it is reportedly quite noisy.
