need help choosing reasonably priced PC speakers.

Looking to get some speakers for a friend. I posted a while back and it was reccomended that I check out Altec Lansing speakers. Now I have, but along the way I've come across some other interesting speakers, and I'm wondering what you guys think about my new choices: (price range is under $100)

Altec Lansing AC3's
Philips MMS305
Harman Kardon Champagne Special Edition

I don't like that the Philips only has a remote. If it had a remote and a knob to adjust the volume, it would be pretty cool.

My friend's AC3's sound decent for the price...but why skimp when you can get the z560's if you just stretched your price range?

[edit] OMG! No comments for 15 minutes then you cut me off within seconds of my post! :|😀

I haven't really considered the Z560s cause she's not a gamer, and she doesn't really have room for a 4.1 setup either, she's in a dorm room.
Right now she has crappy PC speakers, and she just wants something that'll sound good when she listens to her music.

If the Harmon Kardons are the same as the Dell HK-695s...they aren't worth it. For the price, there are better options available.

you can get logitech z560s shipped and save like $25 for that price

Edit: If she wants something that would sound good for music, i'd reccomend grado sr60 headphones

Don't spend over $50 for a 2.1 setup. Get the Labtec Pulse 424 or the Logitech Z-340 speakers. They both kick lots of ass for 2.1

<< A 180Hz crossover is bad? >>

A subwoofer is supposed to play ONLY sounds which are omnidirectional (cant tell where they are coming from)....180Hz is MIDRANGE...you'll be able to HEAR PEOPLE SPEAK from the subwoofer! That's WAYYYYYYYYYY too high

Thanks, good to know. What's the maximum acceptable crossover then?

I personally wouldn't like anything in the three digit range...
get the pulse 424, not the pulse 420. If you don't like those, the Logitech Z-340 (http://www.logitech.com/cf/products/productoverview.cfm/3261) are your best bet. The pulse 424 is discontinued, so good luck finding them. 😛

Even if she does not play games the Z-560's sound great for music. You can always hook it up as a 2.1 system if there is no room to spare. If you want to spend a little more on speakers that are audiophile like, may i suggest the Swans M200 from av123 for $199 - sale price! Review here. The best sounding system for music in this price range even if they don't include a subwoofer. The other systems you listed don't cut it for music imo.

hmmm... i came in here thinking to recommend some AR-9s or something... thought it was a stereo setup... whooops!...

Oops, sorry about that. title edited. 🙂

...suck.

And your calling others idiots??
>>

Your precious v2-400s have the boomiest bass I have ever fvckin' heard in a PC system....Harsh highs out the wazoo :Q If boomy bass, horn tweeters, and ass-rapery prices are your thing, go ahead and buy a Klipsch ProMedia system.
If you have a normal ear and a normal wallet get the Logitech Z-560s for a 4.1 system, a HT system for a 5.1 system (until Logitech expands their Z series to include a 5.1 system, or somebody else jumps in the 5.1 scene), and Some Z-340s for a decent 2.1

Klipsch ProMedia = ASSRAPERY

The only ProMedia system that sounds even close to good is the 5.1, the sub is great on that system...but horn tweets! 😛

IN conclusion of my crappy rambling, yes, you'd have to be a fvckin' idiot to purchase the Klipsch 4.1, and you'd have to be a bigger fvckin' idiot to mention them in this thread.

<< She's not an audiophile...and neither am I. 🙂 >>

In that case, i would recommend the Logitech Z560's.

Klipsch speakers are not Assrapery. Some people..such as yourself..don't like how the horn sounds - harsh and in u're face. Others may find that the horn souds lively and perfect for live music. Yes the 4.1 sub is boomy..but not 'that' boomy. Position the sub out in the open where it has some breathing room - never under desks and near walls. That should keep the boom down to a minimum. Imo the klipsch 4.1 system was never intended solely for music..it is more of a gaming/movie system as far as I am concerned. As far as prices go, they aren't the best value but far from 'ass-rapery'. That's why i recommended the Z560's 🙂
