Need help choosing between the Zen Vision M and Zune.

Just wanted to get thoughts now that Zune has been out for a little while. Here are my wants in an mp3 player:

  • To be able to convert a short dvd (surf/snowboarding videos) to a video that can play on the mp3 player easily.
  • To be able to play my 15 gigs of music that i have saved over the years (cds have since been scratched to hell or lost) without issues (i have no idea about DRM stuff).
  • Good sound quality. ( I have my own earbuds, so i dont care about the ones that they come with)
  • Good video quality ( i see that the zune is bigger, but is that better?)

My iAudio X5 Media Player finally bit the dust after a long time and I want to get a good one to replace it. Thanks for any personal experience or thoughts.

From what I've heard the Zen Vision M should be the best for video. The screen is bigger than the Zen's. You might as well just buy an iPod if you want a Zen, because it's better in every way.

Edit: I meant to say that the iPod is better than the ZUNE! DOH!!

If you've thought about getting Napster's music rental service it probably works with the Zen (check Napster) but it definitely does not work with Zune.

I thought I read that Zune offers some MS rental service, not sure of the details, but it does not work with Napster, Rhapsody, or any protected WMA music sellers like Buy.com.

except for all of the ways it's not.

I have the Zen Vision:M 60GB, and the video quality is quite high, and it has an included content converter to knock down the size of videos to be transferred onto the player. So far I'm really enjoying, but I have never owned another hard drive MP3 player.

Well, I wont be renting music or videos, I will just be using dvds and cds that I own.

How much room does a normal dvd take up after the conversion?

the zen is HD

?

I have a Zen and love it. The iPod is overrated crap. My sister's husband is a hardocre Apple fanboi and I love showing off the Zen to him. 🙂

No argument there, I am not even considering one. How do you like the SQ? Is the equalizer good?

Hehehe... that is funny. In my opinion, the Zen is quite superior to the ipods. More supported video formats, twice the battery life while watching videos, excellent sound quality (I also use my own headphones... a set of Ultimate Ears Super Fi 5 Pro's sound fantastic!), as well as the ability to use other music services besides Itunes. I've been using the Yahoo unlimited, and it has been pretty nice so far. Not compatible with Ipods. Sure, Ipods are better if you have to have some of the crazy and pointless accessories they offer... granted, some are quite nice, but I'm not really in need of accessories. I also find the Zen to be just as easy to use as the ipods. So really it is personal taste that dictates your decision. For what you want to do, the Zen is clearly the better choice, in my opinion!

So the resolution is higher than that of the Zune even though the screen is a half inch smaller?

Correct, the image is much nicer and it suports jsut about any video format you can throw at it. ( i think zen is better then Ipod, and i own a ipod. (my bro has a zen))

Its starting to sound like it, I guess the only reason i was really considering the Zune was some of its unique features and the screen size.

I figured you would pop in here with another one of your worthless responses. Thanks for stopping by.

..Except he's right. Other then size (thinner), iPod has nothing on Zen. NADA.

Well my mind is made up, thanks to all for making my Zen Vision M buy one that I feel good about.

I hope this thread can help out others in future when considering these two.

It definitely helped me 🙂 Now to choose between the Green Zen or go for the 60gb.
