Need help choosing a receiver

alfa147x

Lifer
Right now I have a Aiwa AV-D97 receiver, i dont have any video going into it.
I have these plugged into it:
Dish HD VIP211 (Optical)
Samsung DTBH260F (Optical)
Xbox 360 (Optical)

I don't want to put any money in for speakers as my dad said he will in a few months around $700
(5.1)

All of the above have HDMI, I would like to use HDMI on them all but can make do with just 2

thanks for the help!

Oh the reason i need a new receiver is due to that this Aiwa keeps switching from 5.1 to 2 - stereo downmix
and I was going to by an HDMI switch but I could use one of these as an alternative (correct?)

You mean you had 1-2 HDMI inputs on your TV itself so you needed another input to get yourself up to 3?

So your hope is to do video switching of all your sources through the receiver and then convert the HDMI output of the receiver to HDMI for the TV?

Do you have any plans to get a Blu-Ray player in the future? (or HD-DVD?)

Whoops, yeah, that's what I meant, DVI 😉

With a BR player in the plans, it would probably be a good idea to get a receiver that can handle the new audio formats over the HDMI input.

I don't know if things have changed very recently, but I think that means spending about $400 on the receiver to get the capabilities.

Keep checking Amazon for the Onkyo 605. I've seen it as low as $388 w/ free shipping. It will do everything you need. $400 is really the entry point for the features you want.
