Hello all

I've been running games on my GeForce 4 TI 4600 for a while but I couldn't run oblivion which means I need a new card;)

I wanna buy something which will cost about 300.
I'm planning on changing my motherboard so that I can get a PCI-e card.
I would be pleased if you would name a motherboard I could use also.I'd preffer intel CPUs.

I'm not familiar with the manufacturers eithe so I'd like to know which one's would be best.

Thanx in advance.

Is your budget 300 for just the graphics card?

If it is then you will want to look at 7900gt/gtx cards or ati x1900 series cards. Both of which will happily munch through oblivion.
Go to general hardware for advice on the system as a whole.

7900GT would be a good choice. Also you should really consider a S939 AMD processor, since those are a very good deal and run games much faster than P4 / P-D processors. If you really want to go Intel, wait a little for their new core2 processors.

I agree with Overheating. If you really want to buy an Intel, and if you're going to shell out $300 for a graphics card, then wait for conroe.

Arguably however, again, if you still want Intel, and you want it NOW, then the Dual core offerings are rather cheap(Pentium D series), and will only get cheaper as time goes by(I believe another price cut is expected), but there's a reason why they're cheap ;)

Conroe's just a better engineered chip overall, less electricity, less heat, better calculation yield, and that's the big story in a nutshell.

As for the mobo, I haven't kept up with Intel's offerings, but I'd suggest a quick peak over at Anandtech's "buyer's guide" review.

Best of luck to your new rig!

You can get a patch that allows oblivion to run in PS 1.1 so your ti 4600 could open it..

Get an X1900XT, it beats the 7900GT/GTX stock by a small margin, its not noisey as many say, and it takes less of a performance hit with AA.

As for the manufacturers... well i find an X1900XT is an X1900XT no matter who made it, mines an ATI and its been fine for me.

Play Battlefield 2 on EVGA's servers. You can win an EVGA 7600 GT KO. I'm always looking for someone to play with- the servers are usually unpopulated. If you use XFire, my name is thewhitebuffalo. Server info here.

If I may shift the focus. . .
I am considering building or buying a new system. I don't play games, but I do intend to do some video editing. I have some home movies which need portions re-arranged and captions added. Also I may do some clips and caps from DVD. I don't plan on the computer being my primary place to watch movies.

I am presently leaning towards an Intel based setup. What are your recommendations for a graphics card? Do I want two cards? Two monitors?

Thanks!

When he said he had a budget of $300, he probably meant he didn't want to pay twice that.
