Treating it as a disease has worked for a lot of people. And, while a lack of will/self restraint can get you started, it's not so easy to decide one day that you're going to stop.
Are alcohol and many drugs physically addictive? Yes indeed, but you don't get addicted by taking one drink per week, or per month, or for that matter, one drink per day...it comes of repeated, frequent abuse.
You don't "catch" this "disease"...it's not contagious of and by itself.
I can't catch cancer from anyone either. Does that mean that cancer isn't a disease?

First off, to all the "waste of a human being" and "go kill yourself" commenters...Hmm, on second thought, I don't even think I need to explain what needs to be done to you all.

Next - Your damn right I did it more than 3 times. The average person with ONE DUI has done it more than three times. However, I can guarantee you that by percentage of the time I did it, I happened to get caught very frequently, which is the primary difference between the average person with 1 or 2 DUI's.

And damn, this is exactly the kind of talk that has caused me to completely forsake my once libertarian political beliefs. Leave it to the people, and there would be plenty of people who are essentially told, "well, you weren't born into a fortunate situation, and you weren't able to make it in time, so go kill yourself". This applies to many situations, not just DUI's.

It is painfully obvious that we do live in a very vengeful society. To those who mention liability - Breathalyzers quite literally take under 5 seconds to perform. What if I was the best person for the job, and took a Breathalyzer before my shift and was randomly EtG tested? What then? In case we have any IDIOTS IN THE HOUSE, this mathematically eliminates ANY possibility I could be risking someone's life due to alcohol. Any questions? If you ask, "well, why go through all that when there are those without the baggage." I am a very competitive person, and to be blunt, I will be better than them, take the restrictions placed on me in stride, and be determined to make the person who took the chance on me look like a genius every day. I wish I could just go about my life like another regular person, but if that is the attitude it takes to succeed, then that is the attitude I will have.

I currently have no vices in relation to pleasures. I can run 10 miles straight (no literally, I can, and I will this morning in just a few hours), I don't eat any junk, I quit smoking around the time I quit drinking, and I take no drugs. How many of those who told me to kill myself can say all of that?

Just out of curiosity, how many of those condemning him because he got some duis can say they NEVER drove drunk? A very small percentage of those that drive drunk get caught and to sat shit like 'go kill yourself' or 'have a drink' are probly among the worst offenders. there are drunks that drive for years without getting a dui. And it's been shown achoholism run in families, so I would call it a genetic defect/disease. my x is an alcoholic and once she took that first drink, it was impossible for her to stop. Why not cut him some slack and give him the benifit of a doubt.

Now as far as Career choice, what interest you? Take some time, maybe take a variety of classes before you decide. Get the required courses out of the way.do you like woking with your hand or your mind? Graphic arts is one possibility.don't look for a quick payoff, most likely you will not be happy.

The point you are missing is why should they bother bending over backwards to employ you when the next person can do the same job at the same level without the hassle? What if you DO take a breathalyzer in the morning and you fail it? Do they can your ass and start over? You are a risk. That's all there is to it. Like it or not, whether you are working on it or not, this is going to take much longer to change than one year sober.
